Pretty simple explanation, but they were having absolutely no trouble recruiting before drones became prevelent and even before the U.S.S. Cole was damaged.
I don't think that Drones are the sole reason why they can effectively recruit.

I think he is referring to the fact that they kill civilians.
Angry families will look for a way to retaliate..

The US is not at war with Yemen...or many other countries they operate drones in. Kind of sad how we've become used to this type of thing.

Not like it's a new concept to the US... did they ever declare war on Cambodia when they pulverized the place during the Vietnam war?

It pisses me off!
I'm tired of this crap, we're not the worlds police, we need to worry about our boarder to the south and terrorism at home before we start using COD style drones killing innocent people in the middle east.

Technically they were never at war with Vietnam or Korea...

Nor are they fighting a war with Yemen. The gov't of Yemen has given the US permission to do drone strikes within the country to fight terrorism. In fact, the Yemeni president supposedly personally approves every drone strike.

Not a chance in hell this is happening.
I was going to link to the "Dirty Wars" video thread I made a while back to remind everyone of what is happening in Yemen and elsewhere, but the video has been pulled.

He is correct. Yemen has had a new President since Feb 2012.
Quote:
Yemen’s leader said Saturday that he personally approves every U.S. drone strike in his country and described the remotely piloted aircraft as a technical marvel that has helped reverse al-Qaeda’s gains.
|
Quote:
“Every operation, before taking place, they take permission from the president,” Hadi said in an interview with reporters and editors from The Washington Post in his hotel suite in the District. Praising the accuracy of the remotely operated aircraft, he added, “The drone technologically is more advanced than the human brain.”

I don't believe for a second that the US is asking for the Presidents approval before a drone strike, but he probably needs to say that.
Although I did not realize they had given permission, my original comment still stands. I do think this type of warfare blurs the lines on something that is extremely important.

They (Yemen) also said that they were the ones that bombed a villiage of terrorists, but it turned out it was the US that had done it (and there were no terrorists there). What they SAY and what they DO are two different things, as it appears you believe as well.
The US isn't calling up the Yemeni president at 3 AM to ask permission...

Sorry, I kind of missed your bolded part. I was focusing on the permission granted part. If Yemen has granted permission, they likely have free reign outside the major centers and I agree with you, I highly doubt they are not calling the President for approval first.

Umm... there's no actual proof this was a done. Despite the shocking headline the evidence suggests otherwise. Firstly the Yemeni security forces are taking responsibility. Not the usa. Secondly drones are typically camouflaged and fly too high for the human eye to see. If witnesses are reporting a plane of any kind, it's probably not a drone and probably part of the Yemeni air force.
