Default Reasonably priced hockey equipment?

Hello all,

My fiance hasn't had new hockey equipment in forever so I'm looking to pick him up some new stuff for Christmas. Just wondering if anyone can give insights on where the most reasonably priced hockey equipment can be found?

Thanks for your help!

Hockey life was pretty decently priced when I got my gear. They used to do an additional 10% off with a scotiabank card. Not sure if they still do.

The Sportchek at Deerfoot Mall by the airport has a big discount section for hockey equipment. Take a look there.

The 10% off for Scotia isn't around anymore at PHL

They had some awesome deals going Black Friday but I think they are over.
If you have some way to order via the States, HockeyMonkey has great prices generally.

I was looking for a new bag at HockeyMonkey and the shipping is a little on the high side.

I know hockey equipment can be pretty pricey and it's probably just for beer league but don't go to cheap. If it was me I'd prefer one or two higher end things than an entire new set of really cheap equipment (or a gift card then he can choose?). Just like clothing or shoes, equipment that is stiff or doesn't fit right can be uncomfortable. I bought a cheaper pair of skates from Sport Chek thinking I'm just playing beer league now I don't need anything fancy. After 2 years they were still not comfortable. Bought a $600 pair this year and they felt perfect right from the start.

As someone who plays hockey (albeit rather terribly) I think you'd be better off getting him a gift certificate for Pro Hockey Life or a store of that ilk. Gear is such a personal preference type of item that unless he tells you specifically what he wants then you're taking a huge gamble on it being the right piece of equipment.

Thanks for the tips everyone. He mentioned two particular pieces he wants; shinpads and a new jock. I'm hoping I can find some of last year's models on sale for a good price but I think that since my brother has asked him to play on Friday, we'll go shopping together tonight. Then we'll air the equipment out and wrap it up. lol.

Nothing says "Merry christmas" like last year's jock.

you can buy a good pair oof shin pads for $60 to $80 (which I think is reasonable).

Jock can be $15 if you go for somethng basic, or $50+, if you go for the jock built into the spandex short

Better or worse than a 10 year old jock? What difference does the year it was manufactured make? I'm quite sure jock technology isn't so different last year to this year.

It doesn't make a difference. Looking for last year's jock just sounded funny to me.

One of my ex-teammates said he bought his jock at Value Village. Sounds a little odd but he said it wasn't used (although I'm sure he wouldn't admit it if it was used...) and was really cheap.
