Not that surprising. He isn't playing even every other game.
Would still keep him rather than Butler.

He's pretty genuinely bad. He doesn't get the same rep as Butler because he's hardly put into situations far above his head, but he's easily just as bad.
I doubt he gets picked up though.

Butlers bad but he gets more ice time; AKA opportunities to suck.

Lots of injuries though. Could be depth that could play now and get buried later when a team's injuries heal and wouldn't count against cap. That being said Gilroy passed waivers the other day so you're probably right.

I also doubt he gets claimed. Good for Abbotsford, I'd imagine Smith is a huge upgrade over ECHL callup Kane Lafranchise. Now gives them an even more solid defensive line, with Billins, Smith, Ramage, Wotherspoon, and Cundari ... plus guys on AHL deals like Arsene, Lamb and MacKenzie. And Sieloff, of course.

I still remember prior to his injury he had for us few years ago he was playing unreal, like a top 4 dman. But since coming back from that injury he was never the same. He has a lot of tools but just isn't putting it together. Still would rather have Smith then Butler though.

Excellent. More bodies to the 1st place AHL team. The D corps can get pretty banged up in the AHL with back to backs and 3in3s. Just a week ago they were calling up defenders from Alaska, now they're getting them from Calgary. Must be really tough to coach an AHL squad.

Smith was a monster for the Heat several weeks ago. So happy he's back.
Now we can take Lamb off the PP

Agreed, you really have to be able to roll with the punches and get the most out of the guys you have, regardless of who they are.
For some reason I've yet to understand, Troy G. Ward (as Kerr like to refer to him) has started to take a decent amount of flack over the past year or so on this board but from everything I've seen, read and heard, this guy is a great coach and I truly hope he takes over as Flames coach sometime in the (very) near future.

There are not many choices that would be as bad as staying with Hartley but this would seem to be right up there. Maybe if he stops with the stupid G. middle initial in he would be a slight upgrade.
Hopefully the team does a thorough search and hires the best candidate and doesn;t just promote the guy a little lower on the totem pole or the GM's best buddy. It would be nice to have a quality coach in here not someone who is there because of connections.

First of all, I lol'd at the middle initial remark. Secondly, I agree that Hartley is one of the worst possible choices to be currently coaching this team. Third, I agree I thorough search is needed, but at the same time think that a young coach that knows how to work with young players is what this team needs for their next coach and Mr. Ward is both of those things. He's also had some decent results in the AHL with some pretty terrible teams, and this season some great results with a better team, granted, but far from a power house.
He might not be the best choice, but given what I know about him and what I think the team needs, I think he would certainly be a top candidate, at the very least. I just hope if and when Hartley is canned we don't see another old fossil from yesteryear brought in to try and develop a young team. Unless his name is Darryl Sutter, I'd be OK with that.
