Default Largest U.S. city bankruptcy

http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/...9B20PZ20131203

"The ruling by U.S. Judge Steven Rhodes, who cited the city's dismal finances and $18 billion owed to a multitude of creditors in support of his decision, marks a watershed in the history of Detroit. Once known as the cradle of the U.S. auto industry, the arsenal of democracy and the birthplace of Motown music, Detroit now adds an ignominious new title: largest bankrupt city in U.S. history."

"About 40 percent of the city's streetlights do not work and about 78,000 abandoned buildings litter the city, whose population peaked at 1.8 million in 1950."

Detroit still has some of the nicest and most interesting architecture in North America.

The history of race relations is interesting in Detroit, particularly how many African Americans from the south moved to Detroit during WW2 to take the jobs that were vacated by soldiers who enlisted. Of course, those soldiers came back and were pissed that they had no jobs, which fueled much of the racial tension through the 1950s and 60s. That racial tension persuaded the wealthy white people to leave Detroit in the 1970s, and the rest is history.

As the Redditt story points out though, many more African Americans tried to enlist but were not accepted (although the reasons why were not clear, I have no doubt that racism was one of them).

Beyond the fact that the U.S. Military didn't believe they had the courage to fight, didn't like whitey so wouldn't fight to protect them, had lower then average IQ's so weren't smart enough to be a soldier, had poor night vision, glowed in the dark because of their shiny skin and liked nothing better then to walk and sing loudly at the same time.

The only military roles that Blacks were allowed in until later in the war were cooks, mess hall specialists and laundry specialists.

Later they were allowed in but into heavily segregated units because the Military didn't believe that white soliders would trust black soldiers and vice versa.

Ontario should buy it and turn it into a theme park of some sort.

Technically he's right. The proper title would be Largest bankrupt U.S. city. As written it reads the bankruptcy pertains to the largest U.S. city.

No, either is correct.

If the title was "Largest US City Bankrupt", then he'd have a legitimate point. 'Bankrupt' is an adjective, making "City" the subject. 'Bankruptcy' is a noun, making "Bankruptcy" the subject that 'Largest' is describing.

That reddit read was to the point, I enjoyed it.

How biased is his reporting? I know nothing of the history of Detroit..

You're forgetting they are useless for amphibious assaults because of the innate inability of the negro to swim.
