Default Big Issue Next Season

If Cammalleri leaves as a free agent next season I can't see anyway that the Flames are going to be able to make the cap floor if indeed it ends up being the speculated $51 million.

Unless they're giving some big raises to guys like Bouma, Byron, Butler and Colbourne it looks to be like they're be hovering around the $44 million mark minus Cammy.

Doubt they're going to be able to get any $7 million free agents to sign here either.

Lots of leverage for Cammalleri in negotiations would be my guess. He's positioned well.

Even though I thought Wideman was on the way out I also think it ensures he'll be on the team again next season. They'll need his salary too towards the cap floor.

Should be an interesting off season for Treliving.

Sign a good backup like Elliott for 2.5 million, sign one of the decent UFA D-men like Niskanen for 5 million. Give raises to a couple of our RFA's.

Cap floor hit.

Could replace Cammy with a couple players? Maybe a forward and a goalie?

Positional needs:

Backup Goalie
2/3/4 pairing Dmen
Rw'ers

There are a few names out there going to FA, others can be traded for either at the draft or off season. Teams have until October. I don't see Treliving having much of an issue.

They are at 43 million right now without Byron/Colbourne/Bouma and a back-up goalie and no spare players. Its not going to be a giant issue.

Getting to the cap floor is really a pretty small problem to have in the grand scheme of things. One trade or free agent signing can fix it. No idea what it will be, but something as simple as taking on a salary dump like Ward out of Carolina... and problem solved.

Back up goalie and a top 9 forward won't be a problem. The 2/3/4 dman is going to be hard to sign. While I would like Niskanen, he is going to have many suitors.

As for cap floor, my guess flames take on a salary dump.

The big problem will be staying above the cap floor WHILE rolling over any of the roster in the process. Basically be the same team minus Cammy and some depth players swapped out.

In NHL 14 I just sign a goon for $14M for one season.

Would this be cap circumvention in the real NHL?

(should be noted that I lose a phone for trading whenever I do this).

Here is what I mean:

- No UFA's retained
- Only kept full time NHL RFA's (Bouma, Byron, Galiardi, Colborne)
- No rookies added like Baertschi, Granlund, Gaudreau, Reinhart, Wotherspoon

Quote:
FORWARDS

1. Jiri Hudler ($4.000m) - Matt Stajan ($3.125m) - David Jones ($4.000m)
2. Curtis Glencross ($2.550m) - Mikael Backlund ($1.500m) - ???????????
3. Paul Byron ($0.900m) - Sean Monahan ($0.925m) - Joe Colborne ($0.850m)
4. T.J. Galiardi ($1.250m) - Lance Bouma ($0.800m) - Brian McGrattan ($0.750m)

DEFENSEMEN

1. Mark Giordano ($4.020m) - T.J. Brodie ($2.125m)
2. Kris Russell ($2.600m) - Dennis Wideman ($5.250m)
3. Ladislav Smid ($3.500m) - ?????????????
Extra - Shane O'Brien ($2.000m)

GOALTENDERS

1. Karri Ramo ($2.750m)
2. ??????????

SALARY CAP: $71,100,000
CAP PAYROLL: $42,895,000
CAP SPACE (18-man roster): $28,205,000
1. Need to add roughly $10 million to hit the floor
2. Only 3 full time roster spots open (plus a couple extra skaters)
3. Doubt we see O'Brien or Galiardi back next year, that would be another $3 million off the payroll, and they are merely depth players

How do you add a big money UFA's to hit the floor without taking roster spots from the half dozen or so prospects that we have knocking on the door?

I'm really curious to see how this off season unfolds for the Flames.

I think the flames will take a cap dump, eat cap on a Wideman trade and sign 1-2 free agents to hit the floor

I can Spend $14 Million, without changing much.

$1.5M Sign a good backup Elliot, Emery, Duybnk, wouldn't even mind Montoya.
$4M x 2Y Sign Ott or Konopka.
$1M Give Wolf the rookie max
$7.5M Give Bouma, Butler, and Colborne good raises, maybe get some extra years cheap

Maybe not a high end attack, But certainly Balanced.

Hudler-Backlund-Jones
Glencross-Monahan-Colborne
Gaudreau-Konopka-Wolf
Bouma-Stajan-Byron
+Knight/McGrattan

Gio-Brodie
Russel-Wideman
Smid-Wootherspoon
Butler

Ramo
Montoya

I also feel like even with Byron and Gaudreau this is a "Heavier" team.

I'm not a big fan of over paying our RFA's just to help get to the cap floor either.

In my mind it sets a bad precedent. While you don't want to try to be overly cheap and piss players and their agents off, souring future negotiations and sullying your reputation....at the same time you don't want to be overpaying RFA's down the road when we're back to be a playoff team and up against the cap again, because you set that bar high by overpaying now.

Making the cap floor isn't a problem... it's easy. What's difficult is making the cap floor in a reasonable way that set's you up for future success. I mean they could pay a back-up goaltender league max and call it a day if they want to... they'd be laughingstocks to the whole league so they won't but they theoretically could. Just gotta find a reclamation project or two and offer them big money, really short-term... if they pan out you can eat $$ at the deadline and get something back for them and if they don't... oh well they helped you make the cap.

Yup. That's how Jones got his $4 million a year contract from the av's .

lol. Wouldn't it take you like an hour pressing the right button to move the salary offer from $800k to $14M?
