Parent fined over kid's lunch
Holy ####.
http://www.calgarysun.com/2013/11/18...-in-kids-lunch
Quote:
After sending her children to daycare with a lunch of roast beef, carrots and potatoes, Kristen Bartkiw was fed a $10 fine.
The reason: An unbalanced meal.
Despite the presence of a meat, vegetable, fruits and juice, the meal was missing a grain. The solution was to give the Rossburn, Man., school teacher a $10 fine and give her children Ritz Crackers as a supplement.

Ritz crackers, is there any grain left there after all the sodium and butter? What a joke.

Number of posts before a Sun Reader says "nanny state" = 1.
The school should not be inspecting lunches - how do they know the children aren't getting enough balance from breakfast and supper?
What about vegetarian families?

Absolutely ridiculous. It's the parents' responsibility to ensure their children are eating "correctly", not the daycare centre. If I ever saw something like this come home from my kids' school Principal you can bet I would tell him in no uncertain terms exactly what he could have for dinner that night.

Umm, doesn't that say that parents shall be fined $5 for each item missing?
Also, if you put juice in there but not milk, you could be fined? Seriously?

Okay, we're 5 posts in, and I'm pretty sure no one has actually read the article yet.
Good job fellas.

Maybe parents shouldn't agree to stupid rules and then get mad about them later?
Sure the daycare's policy is dumb, but they can't fine someone without having an agreement beforehand.

Read the article, then you will really be scratching your head. The parent that was fined, was on the board that came up with the rules in the first place. The idea was to deter parents who sent their kids with only a pizza pop for lunch. I don't understand why this even made it into the newspaper?

I did, I'm not sure what you're referring to?
Except maybe that yeah, they've already given up on that ridiculous system.
It's still a pretty WTF story.

The segment in reference (I think):
Quote:
The daycare eventually dropped this policy and chose instead to provide children with a hot lunch.

And the article was published Nov 18 2013, while the note is dated December 10 2012.

I remember reading before that the concept of the "4 basic food groups" was actually invented by some dairy company to get people to consume more dairy products. It was so successful that we started indoctrinating children about it, despite the fact calcium is available in many non-dairy foods and without all the fat.
(Too lazy to look up a link)

The Sun wins again.
Granted the story is a bit interesting considering it's a abnormal policy; which didn't last long.

I'm scratching my head as to why they used Walmart.com to find how many calories are in Ritz crackers. Was the Nabisco site down?!?
If I am reading this correctly:
- The parent that was fined did not get overly upset about the situation.
- The school changed their policy and offer to provide meals rather than fining parents for inappropriate meals
And this is news, how, exactly? And how does the Sun stay in business?
