Tallon drafted Olson in 2009 for the Hawks;

Olsen is a former late 1st rounder. Hayes is a late 2nd rounder.
Olsen probably will make the NHL but as a final pairing guy. Hayes may end up as a adequate 3rd liner. Neither are great prospects.

Olsen was one of the guys that I hoped the Flames were going to be able to pick-up in that draft.

Worked out ok.
Smid+Granlund+Wotherspoon instead of Olsen.
I actually like Wotherspoon alone as a prospect more than Olsen.

Didn't expect this.

The Hawks look poised to repeat if Versteeg fan regain his 2010 form.

Jimmy Hayes is the older brother of the Hawks 2010 1st rounder, Kevin Hayes.

Were there contract issues between the Hawks and Kevin Hayes?

The Panthers keeping half the salary too? Very underwhelming return if that's the case.

A $2.2M Vertseeg is a good deal for the next 3 seasons.

Versteeg has been their worst player. He doesn't give a crap about playing in Florida. Lucky to get rid of him.

Playing in Chicago should re-invigorate Versteeg. Great deal for them.

Depends on whether he's still capable of NHL level hockey. Currently he's not good enough to contribute in Florida but maybe he'll find some new energy.

I have my doubts. Either way, any deal to get him away from their young players is a good one.

A bad stretch with a terrible team shouldn't destroy someones value that quickly, unless they are worried about his knee. It was several years where he was a consistent 20-25 guy, if not better. And he's only 27.

Now Florida had to retain half his salary to move him for Olsen? I think it's closer to Tallon being too high on his own draft picks and maybe told to move salary quickly.

Great move for the Hawks just hope Versteeg leaves his "rapping" skills in FLA!

Not able to contribute? He is tied for 5th in scoring for them. Not great but far from the garbage player you are trying to paint him as.

Two years ago he scored 54 points for the Panthers.

Seems like a good risk for the Hawks to add to their 3rd line for two guys that likely don't see regular time on their team in the next two years anyways.

Having actually watched him in several games this season, I think it's an unnecessary deal by Chicago. More likely that the Hawks will be trying to unload him as well after a while. The deal reflects the fact that he's been remarkably awful, not just struggling.

Worst player on the second worst team in the league. I stand by that.

Still it's only several games this season. A bad even absolute terrible stretch of maybe 10 games shouldn't destroy his value so heavily.

It would be different if they were just unloading him for nothing, but keeping close to 7M in salary more or less just to get rid of him? That seems like an awfully big fall for a player signed to that contract a year ago (and only 28 games played since signing it).
