Default Blues nix high fives at bench

I'm glad to see this. It's driven me nuts for some reason for years. To me, heading to the bench to high five everyone screams minor hockey. Score a goal, celebrate with your team on the ice and head back to centre to try again.

Great. Now, can the NBA stop players from high fiving every teammate after every free throw?

Volleyball high fives and group hugs also say hi.

it always amazes me which small and unimportant facets of the game can annoy certain fans for some reason. Incredible.

God forbid wanting to celebrate a goal with the rest of your teammates I guess. What a dumb thing to fuss over IMO.

Heading to the bench to skate along for some hand slapping seems to keep it about the team, everyone is celebrating that way. I'd say limit the guys who want to make the goal all about themselves. Skating half way across the ice to jump into the boards, dropping to a knee to do some silly arm swoop, skating and sliding to center ice like some hillbilly, cut that crap out first.

I don't know which is more dumb- that this is actually a story, or that anyone seriously listened to Brett Hull.

I see no problem with celebrating a goal. better stop the hugging in figure skating as well.

Good to hear...

I always thought the high 5s along the bench were very minor-hockey.

This is crap. Every goal, no matter how insignificant, should be "cellied" with a 100 foot knee slide....

Oh wait, this isn't Edmonton. Never mind.

"The old guard fun police strike again."

It's not like the bench isn't allowed to celebrate also, don't get why the author takes issue with this. Personally I'm not a big fan of the fly by fist bumps. If it's a big goal, game winner, heck, even a shoot out goal, I don't care. But when the team is getting beat 5-2 it seems obligitory and all the guys are half into it anyway. If your line is staying on the ice, go to center. If you are changing after the goal and happen to high five on the way to the bench, so be it. Spontaneous celebrations are fun, routine staged ones are lame.

Troutman - totally agree with the stupid NBA hich fives after every attempt, good or bad. What a forced show of fake support.
"Hey Dwight Howard, great job on missing 8/10 uncontested shots from a spot you have attempted thousands of times before, you keep going buddy, we are all proud of you" - no one

Jankowski did both on the same goal:

I think it's funny how in the NCAA the goalie gets in on the action as well.

I remember last year when Hanowski scored his first NHL goal, he skated all the way back to the faceoff dot (and probably saw MacDonald standing there motionless) before he clued in that you don't high five the goale in the NHL.

OMG…don't turn the NHL into the NFL (No Fun League) please.

Nothing wrong with a team celebration of a goal as long as it doesn't go overboard. Fist bumps seem totally appropriate.
