Smith was second star in Abbotsford's game last night with no points or shots. He must've made a very large impact defensively.

Loubardias was on the FAN yesterday and mentioned he feared that Gio may have suffered a hairline fracture or something along those lines.
My guess is they likely went and did an MRI when they got back yesterday, and the news wasnt what anyone wanted.
Too bad if so, because he was playing as well as any Dman in the league to start the year.

Gio has been good but not as good as any other Dman in the league...Flames best, yes and it'll hurt to see him gone. Hopefully Smith can come in and be a solid addition that way when Gio is back, one of "bad & worse" can come out of the line up.

Smith from 2 years ago looked completely fine in the top 4. Hopefully we see that version of Smith while Gio recovers.

Smith was a beast last night. I know he had no points, but he logged around 26 minutes last night. It's a mystery why he didn't get a point because he was so damn creative.

Is there a minimum amount of time a player needs to spend on IR once he is designated?

Matter of opinion I guess but I think you're underestimating Gio's start this season. He has been one of the best dmen in the league to start the season, from all of the games I've seen. He sits 3rd in points among defensemen despite having missed the last 2 games, has logged a ton of minutes, and has played well defensively as well. Add to that his overall leadership to a young team and a weak defensive core, as well as his physical play and it's tough to argue that he hasn't.

Hope Gio is back soon. I can't see the flames winning any games until he comes back. Gio was playing the best hockey of his career and in doing so, keeping the rag tag group of defenders looking somewhat respectable. I'm not sure without Gio if the flames will be able to keep games close.

Giordano is 3rd in league scoring for defenseman. I'd say that's better than most defenseman in the league. His absence has been very noticeable.

I'm fine with us having some injuries to our defence this year, though Giordano certainly didn't deserve it with the start he's having. We've got three young guys we need to challenge down in Abby, and as the depth is tested, they'll see a lot more minutes in Abby or get a cup of coffee up here.
The forward group seems fine for now, the d-core needs some stress testing. And here we go.

It's unlikely Smith bumps Butler out of the top 4, but I like your thinking.

Looking at that line-up of D, if they can keep the opposing team to 4 or less goals , i would call it a win.
