tough write up
Glencross - 3 because of bonehead plays by Butler and Brodie and a missed man by Stempniak
and the quick whistle on a puck to the head - really??

All in all I’m pretty impressed actually. The Flames had enough go wrong in the first period to call it a night but they pushed hard and slowly took the play away from the Ducks on enemy ice. Nothing in that game hurts the Flames early season story. Well done!
|
That's pretty much it for me. Got ourselves in some trouble to start against a team that so far has thrived in the early minutes of games. But managed to weather the storm and certainly had our chances to tie things up. Not much to be disappointed with in that loss.
Can't say I'm a fan of some of these costly giveaways by our more veteran players ending up in the back of our net though. Would be slightly more understandable and forgivable if it were coming from the rookies. Hopefully this trend ends quickly.

Yeah, Glencross was giving a half a**ed effort all night. To me he looked intimated while the young guys who didn't know any better were giving it.

TSN had a great segment showing how the Flames are protecting Monahan in their own zone by having Sven Baertschi play the center role defensively. Anyone else enjoy the irony in Brian Burke’s “only plays in one of the three zones occasionally” whipping boy being the guy to help the kid out in his own zone?
|
That's true Baertschi has been playing hard in all three zones and threw a few good checks as well. What TSN also said is that Baertschi would look at Monahan to see if he wanted to resume his centre duties but Monahan would shake his head, so I don't think it's a plan by the Flames. I noticed after that happened a couple of times, Monahan missed a couple of shifts.
Anyways great effort by the Flames, bad luck they couldn't capitalize.
Colburne finally is looking like he's not just a tourist. Streets a hard worker but I'll be glad when Stajan is back. Backlund had a good game.

Agreed.... Plus Minus is a poor stat in many ways.
Kind of like giving an error to the center fielder when the shortstop mishandled the ball.
Was Glencross the primary, secondary or even the tertiary cause for any of the goals against?

Just watched the game... I thought Colborne lookedp good. He was the most involved that I've seen him in a game. He may not be top-6 material but he should be pretty useful on the 3rd line. Sick hands to tip the puck in as he did on the no-goal. Should have scored on his breakaway.
Quietly impressed with Russell. Good things happen while he's out on the ice. Basically contributes as much or more than Bouwmeester but for a fraction of the price.
Butler was a liability in his limited minutes. Joey Mac is not the answer. I hope Ramo gets the nod against the Sharks... Actually, maybe I don't. Whoever starts that game is going to get lit up like a Xmas tree!

I'm not sure Stempniak or MacDonald deserve any blame on Penner's goal. That was a pretty amazing pass by Getzlaf.

Glencross was just going through the motions which is disappointing but I don't see how the Butler/Brodie don't share the goat horns as their giveaways were the sole reason the Flames don't at least get a point in this game. Maybe it's me but it looks like Brodie has hit the wall.
I also thought Wideman had a poor game. He single handedly killed off some of the Flames powerplays and continues to makes silly plays in his own end.

Scoring Winger
|
Great write-up, thanks!
As some have mentioned, Joe Colborne's best game this season by a mile. Was actually a scoring threat out there, used his speed to get a breakaway!, and even threw some hits. I think he's a much better fit on the 3rd line- with some quicker wingers.
Hope it's the start of more to come...though it might help send Monahan down/force a Stajan trade.

It was a good game by Colborne, and it would have been nice to see him rewarded with a goal there.
The no-goal on Colborne's goal was obviously the right call, but I agree with what they were saying on TSN that it is an odd situation due to Colborne's height. I would prefer the definition of a "high stick" to be uniform in situations where a player is knocking the puck down out of the air whether it leads to a goal or not. If it is legal enough to not get whistled down immediately as a high stick, then it should be a legal way to score... just in my humble opinion.
The rules as they stand were applied correctly so I have no complaints, but I think this is one they should look at changing.

Glencross was doing nothing all night, nothing. Butler is a third pairing defenseman that played like a third pairing defenseman.
The puck thing ... did you miss the "hate to be a jerk but ..." clearly I understand that they had to blow it, but to see the guy jump up in seconds was a disappointment.
Is that ok?

According to a CP thread he's the worst defenseman in hockey.

Not being a charter member of the Stempniak fan club I thought he had a great game.
As the highest paid Flames forwards Hudler and Stempniak delivered and Glencross did not.
The Flames are playing with their complete first line $ wise injured.
Cammalleri- Stajan - Jones (13.5M) --- are they on this road trip?
Not quite the same but the Ducks would be cooked with their top $ line (19M) Getzlaff - Perry and Penner in sick bay.

This game strengthened my belief that they aren't going to finish near the bottom of the standings like many predicted.
Odds stacked against them, things didn't go their way early, and they responded with a gutsy second half and almost pulled out a point. You could tell their legs were weary near the end but they still showed enough that if teams take them lightly they will steal a point, if not two.
Fun to watch!

The standards for third pairing defensmen have definitely lowered since times when we had Andrew Ference and Steve Montador as our bottom pair.
