Default Car Accident - Insurance Options?

Hoping CP can help me out - was in a car accident (not my fault), and my car is close to being a write-off but insurance wants to repair.

Normally, I wouldn't have an issue with this, but this will be the 2nd major repair on my car in 2 years, so I am worried about the re-sale value of my car being severely hurt with a 2nd repair.

Do I have any option to get insurance to just write it off, or am I stuck with their decision?

Doesn't exactly answer your question, but I keep hearing about this on the radio. Not sure if it's true.

I wonder if you could talk to them about accepting a lower value for your vehicle and getting them to write it it off, as you may have to take a low value if you trade it in /try and sell it.

Pray for large supplements and additional hidden damages to be found and at the point it may be a total loss. Once a vehicle hits a percentage of its ACV (actual cash value) usually 70-85% depending on the insurance company than it is deemed a total loss. Good Luck!

How much is the damage vs. the actual value in terms of %. If it is close to the write off point you might want to take it to a second shop to estimate the damge. They may find more damage then the first one.

I know back in saskatchewan you could take a cash payout of the actual damage amount and then your car couldn't be licencesed again until passing inspection. haven't dealt with Alberta though.

Body shop said 13K in damages - based on Black book, car is worth approx $16K... that is definitely in the range you gave.

DO NOT sign a work order. Contact the adjuster and appraiser and request a secondary inspection or have it written off. If you have already signed a work order and they are working on it you may be SOL. Even if they find small damage at this point they will repair it. IF they find something big you might get lucky and they will total it. If you havent signed anything and it was towed to a shop and they are working on it without authorization tell them that you will refuse delivery. Play hardball to get what you want.

Yeah thats a write off. Its weird that they would even consider repairing that, I would bet the actual cost of repair goes above the value.

You could approach the other insurance company (the at fault one) and ask what they are willing to do.

From my experience, the estimate will typically be lower than the actual repairs since they cannot see hidden damage, as has been eluded to in this thread already...
