Default Lost dog (not mine)

Because I've never had to do this before...just a question. Found a big Malamute (I think?) running around our neighborhood, just when I was taking the garbage out to the bins. He's very friendly but we live a block away from a super busy road and I didn't want him getting hit, or getting into my garbage. He came running when I whistled, and is very friendly. Had tags and a collar, so I got a name and number from that and left a message. I assume the owners are at work.

We're thinking of loading him in the car and taking him to a local vet to see if he's chipped at all. Does the vet charge us to do that, does anyone know? Or would they charge that to the owner? I don't mind if he waits in my backyard until his owner is able to get him, but I wondered if he was chipped, if the vet would give me his information and I could just return him home and save the owner's the hassle.

He's just gorgeous. And huge! Very well behaved/trained. Quiet, friendly, and doesn't jump up at all, which is good because he'd bowl me right over - if he stood on his hind legs, he'd be taller than I am.

If you have already called, then I would just wait for them to call you back.

Good on you for looking after the big guy!

I would give it the day. I think you can take him to one of the shelters and they can read the chip and make the call for you.

What a gorgeous dog and they are a great breed if trained properly

He seemed happy to go for a ride, so we took him to a local vet. They scanned him (no charge), and he was chipped. They phoned the bylaw people at the town to check about him. The owner had just gotten off the phone with the bylaw people, so they talked to me. They had the guy's cell phone - the number on the tag was the home number and the owner was out looking for him, so he hadn't received our message. Town phoned the owner and told him to meet us at the vet's - so he's home now. We recognized the owner's vehicle (he is a dealer for DeWalt?) so we know where the dog lives now so if he ever gets out, we know where to take him. It's only a few blocks from us. So happy he's home.
