Our preseason goaltending situation
The first few games are played and every goalie was given the opportunity to show what he has to offer. Now my questions. Do you trust in a Berra / Ortio tandem? Has managemant the balls to waive Ramo or play him with the Heat?
So far Ramo and Mcdonald are the odd mens out..

Lets maybe give them more than 30 minutes of game time before we decide who plays where? Or is that not reasonable?

Its based on the rookie tournament, the scrimmages and the first pre-season game.. Just want to know if it is possible to go with berra/ortio and demote the "vets" Ramo and mcdonald..

Just watched the highlights...
Ramo's performance:
-First goal, wasn't a goal but it shouldn't have gotten to that point, needs to be quicker.
-Second goal, no chance as Smyth is left all alone in front of the net.
-Third goal, big scramble and no dman is clearing the puck or the body.
-Fourth goal, made 2 saves and the D is nowhere to clear the puck, 3rd shot goes in
You can almost say none were his fault.
Berra's performance:
-Likes to poke the puck on the shootout like Kipper
-Good right pad, but lift the puck and those are easy shootout goals
Not many highlights from the other game.
McDonald imo will be on the team no matter what.

They should each face three more shots before anything is decided.

If we waive Ramo and then send him to the minors, $1.85M of his salary stays on the Cap and he makes his entire NHL pay this season of $2.6M. I have no idea how Ramo would fare on waivers. Nor if ownership wants to spend $2.6M on a minor league goalie and use almost $2M in cap space that has no impact on improving the NHL club.
McDonald I could see being demoted without concern, as his salary is close enough to the $900K cap exemption that financial considerations wouldn't impact ownership or management. Losing him on waivers would be the risk, but again that's probably small - mind you we acquired him that way ourselves last season.
So in a sense, it's probably possible. I can't imagine it is being seriously considered at all at this time. We'll see how preseason unfolds.

I would actually go with the 3 headed monster for the first half of the season. Berra, Ramo and MacDonald. Win, you play again, lose, on to the next guy. That way you are giving the two unproven guys (Berra/Ramo) a legit shot while having a reliable backup in there just in case.
At the mid point (or sooner if one really struggles) send the worst of the three to the minors.

Goalie evaluation is pretty much entirely bull**** and voodoo. For example, Kipper was the best goalie in the world in 03-04, and San Jose had him as the 3rd stringer behind Vesa Toskala. So if the high end of professional talent evaluators can have the single best goalie in the world in their own building, and they sit him in favor of Toskala, I have little faith in the ability of regular slobs like us to accurately project the NHL success of relatively raw prospects based on very limited viewings.
That said, no. There is no way Feaster goes with a Berra/Ortio duo. I think Heaven and Earth would have to move for Feaster to go with anything other than a Ramo/McDonald combo.
McDonald is the only predictable one, because we know without a shadow of a doubt he can be a backup calibre NHL goalie. And Ramo has already proven he can be a top goalie in a top-tier pro league, so he has the smallest jump to make to be a legit NHL starter.
Personally, I'd go with Ramo, and whoever has looked the best so far when the season starts (which I would say is Ortio right now, but again, what do I know?).

Did you seriously have no idea what this thread would be about because of the title?

Rookie tournament should have nothing to do with it. The competition is from day one of camp until the end.
Way to early for this thread. Plus McDonald played better than Ortio in Calgary game. Would that not put him in 2nd spot right now?

reading the game threads from the oilers games looks like Berra played very well while Ramo really struggled with rebounds.
Then Jmac ....let in the first shot and strggled while Ortio played better.
did I catch that right? any one get to watch both???

Far too early to make this kind of call.
But Ramo is still the odds-on favourite, IMO.

Jmac played well after the first goal. He faced a lot tougher shots/chances than Ortio did. The 3rd goal should not have happened. It was a routine glove save that Ortio should have had.

Yup. They are paying him $2.6 million for a reason.
Also the only way i see Ortio making the team is if he is the clear #1. I don't see any scenario where they have him up as a back-up. No chance they go Ramo/Ortio or Berra/Ortio.

Didn't see the game from Edmonton but the highlights show that Ramo needed more help in scrambles, and really couldn't be faulted.
Happy that Berra has had a good start, ... not sure why I feel this way, but guys acquired in the Iginla and Bouwmeester trades tend to get more push from me to succeed (think I just want that story of the two deals turning the franchise around)
MacDonald was good tonight, Ortio was a little week on the first one he gave up.
Way too early, but I wouldn't put any of these guys out of the mix after those two games.

Does Brossoit have to go pro, or can he be returned to CHL?

Ortio was also beaten on his first shot.
I thought MacDonald played well - can hardly fault him for a screened deflection

I agree that Ramo didn't get much help clearing the front of the net, but I felt he could have done a better job absorbing some of those shots and not giving up a 2nd/3rd/4th shot. Could just be a matter of adjusting to how much harder/faster NHL shots are. Time will tell.

OP: as rhetorical questions, yes I could trust a Berra / Ortio tandem, if they have earned the spots; would management have the balls to demote Ramo, hard to say.
However, it is way, way too early to start this conversation - Berra and Ramo have played 30 minutes each. As someone else stated, decisions will be made based on a full body of work. That will include practice.
Let me tell you about a player named Hannu Jarvenpaa... In the wake of Selanne mania, another young Finn comes to Jets camp and, in his first pre-season game, scores 4 goals. Fans go crazy - the Jets have found a magical fountain of Finnish hockey talent. If memory serves, Jarvenpaa puts up a couple more goals as camp goes on. Needless to say, Jarvenpaa was not another Selanne.
This story happens pretty much every season.
