Default Why Gen Y yuppies are unhappy

Wanted to bring this up with the occupy movement being brought up again

It's pretty straightforward -- when the reality of someone's life is better than they had expected, they're happy. When reality turns out to be worse than the expectations, they're unhappy.

From the above link......

Paul Harvey, a University of New Hampshire professor and GYPSY expert, has researched this, finding that Gen Y has "unrealistic expectations and a strong resistance toward accepting negative feedback," and "an inflated view of oneself." He says that "a great source of frustration for people with a strong sense of entitlement is unmet expectations. They often feel entitled to a level of respect and rewards that aren't in line with their actual ability and effort levels, and so they might not get the level of respect and rewards they are expecting."

^ LOL
Also called narcissism.

Hey I work with a guy in that age group who thinks it's okay to video a guy pouring boiling water on a fox kit because "he's going to do it anyway"

Ah OMG

whenever I mention that to someone the answer is "oh, it's that generation".

I like to think it's just one (well, two)frikkin idiots.

I really cannot stand to go into work any more.

I just wanted to add that I dont think this is limited to just Gen Y. It seems everyone is living with ENTITLEMENT these days. Generally people just dont care about people as much as the past. Its essentially keeping up with Jones' x100 in my opinion regardless if you have the energy and drive to get the things you want.

Gen Yers are different and they do tend to be lazy and entitled unless they really care about something. For people in supervisory positions it can be a challenge to motivate the Gen Ys but if you do they will work their ass off for you.

I guess it's our turn (Gen X) to complain about the next generation. Cat in the cradle and all that.

I'm not even a member of Gen Y, and I'm already sick of all the millennial-bashing.

With the possible exception of the Greatest Generation, every cohort is disparaged by their elders when they're 20-somethings. Are we already forgetting how Gen Xers were collectively described as being a bunch of unambitious slackers in the 90s and how the Baby Boomers were called the "Me generation" in the 70s because they were perceived as being self-involved and narcissistic as young adults?

I don't think believing that the current wealth distribution is completely messed up means you're a sad yuppie.

I think if some of the older folks had to leave school to no jobs and 100k in student loan debt, they might have the same attitude.

There was a recession in the 80's where people couldn't find jobs.

That's you though. Chasing that new car, bigger house, fanciest clothes pretty much was established during your generation.

There's a recession every decade where people can't find jobs. That doesn't change the fact that a kid coming out of school now has a MASSIVE hurdle to leap just to be able to get their life started and it hasn't always been this way.

There are many like me who never aspired to have the best of everything. Not everyone is materialistic in nature.

I'm confused? I'm Gen Y I guess, and I along with the majority of my Gen Y friends and family are educated with a bachelor's or higher, own property, are in stable relationships/married, have achieved life goals and continue to grow as people.

Who the hell are all these articles talking about? Bronies? Autistic manchildren living in their parents basement?

I think these writers really have to get off the internet as they have a very skewed view of what 20-30s are like right now.

How many have lived through a recession where the bottom fell out of the housing market in Alberta where many lost thier homes?

Agreed, but that doesn't mean that what I said isn't the case. Society has 50+ years of constant conditioning to chase the dream. Are people shocked when people get down when their life doesn't end up like they're taught it should be?
