12 Year Old Girl Forced To Reenact Slavery On Field Trip
And this isn't the first time this 'classroom' has got up to this crapola. I swear, I would need to be met at the school by a tactical squad - my first reaction in reading this makes me want to go in with a flame thrower.

Quote:
During a Nature’s Classroom field trip organized by Hartford Magnet Trinity College Academy last year, a 12-year-old black girl was forced to pretend she was a slave as part of a historical reenactment. During the simulation she was called the N-word, chased through the woods, and threatened with physical violence including whipping and cutting her Achilles. Nature’s Classroom has been criticized for this same reenactment in the past, but continues do it.
Now, Sandra and James Baker—the girl’s parents—have taken their complaints to the Connecticut School Board and the Human Rights Commission after 10-months of trying to get an apology from their daughter’s former school. Other students who went on the same trip were recently debriefed, and described being similarly horrified by the experience.

on one hand it's terrible that she had to be put through it, on the other hand, it's a dark part of American history and needs to be taught. These kids don't have their tv covering their eyes with the garbage that is out there. This way the students see how crappy it really was for the slaves.

Well, I've never called a twelve year old girl a N*****, chased her through the woods threatening to cut her achilles and whip her but I still learned about slavery.
You can't honestly tell me this was necessary to their education can you?

Well I think it may be something that should be taught. Because it was what happened, not like they had dinner and made someone work for them. The kids need to learn what it was actually like.
I think it was over the top, maybe hire some actors instead of kids but stuff like the slave trade and holocaust need to be taught with the utmost importance to violence and gore to show how bad it really was.

Are you serious?
We can teach kids about atrocities throughout history without giving them PTSD.

Should we then also teach that murder is bad by stabbing someone in front of them? Or rape? It sounds like you think traumatizing children is actually the best teaching method.
This 12 year old black girl was "called the N-word, chased through the woods, and threatened with physical violence including whipping and cutting her Achilles" and your reaction was "it may be something that should be taught"??!!! I don't think saying it was "over the top" really quite covers it.

I don't even know what to say to this.
Scratch that - I do. But it would probably get me banned.

To be fair, he lives in Alabama. It's not like they can use books.

So, let me get this straight.
The guy that thought a school shooting scene on a TV-MA TV show (Sons of Anarchy) was too much, is the same guy that thinks making a 12 year old girl "experience slavery" so they can be educated about it is an OK idea?

Well - you may be explaining it poorly but here's what it sounds like. Let's go to Dachau and pick the Jewish child out of the group and roast her. So that, you know, she and her classmates/companions get a true sense of the atrocities. </Godwin>

Sounds reasonable, I understand that next week all the Japanese kids are going to be rounded up and left in a portable for the day to teach them about internment camps. That's the only way these kids will learn.
