Default D-Day landing tribute

Very cool tribute that's now been washed away in the tide.

A pair of British artists have created this stunning installation of 9,000 silhouettes on a D-Day Landings beach to mark international Peace Day.
The project, named, 'The Fallen' is a tribute to the civilians, German forces and Allies who lost their lives during the Operation Neptune landing on June 6, 1944.

That is very cool, but I am surprised they would not have timed it to coincide with an anniversary of the landing (June 6).

Maybe they didn't want to occupy the beach with the installation on a day where a lot of people would be looking to pay their own respects on the beach. No idea, just a thought.

On a somewhat related note, has anyone done a tour of the Canadian beaches? Heading over that way in a bit and would like to spend a day up there

I'd really like to check out the Juno Beach memorial and information centre one day. Anyone else been?

Not much help now to the two above posters, but will make the journey to Juno beach next June. Also Dieppe, Somme, Vimy, and Ieper/Ypres.

Will for sure go to the Juno beach info center, maybe the museum at Caen also.

Was at the Juno Beach Centre last year as well as Arromanches, Ypres, Dieppe, Vimy, Vancouver Corner, visited many cemeteries, fantastic trip! Vimy is definitely a must see place. My Dad was captured at Dieppe.

Met an old fellow at the Museum of the Regiments who went ashore at Dieppe. He was in the Calgary Tanks, number 5 I think he said. Never made it off the beach, eventually captured.

His story of that day, and the years of captivity was amazing.

90 -92 years old I think he said he was, and he could still do the punishment he endured daily. Face a wall, go up on your tiptoes and put your chin against a wall. Then stay there for an hour. If his heels touched ground, or his chin left the wall, he got a rifle butt in the back, or worse a poke with a bayonet.

This was punishment for taking off his handcuffs/shackles. He said he still took them off every day, just because he could, and it upset the guards.

He was so proud, "see 92 and I can still do it" as he chinned the wall.

My Dad landed at Red Beach in Dieppe with the Essex Scottish, also never made it off the beach.
