Lostprophets have always been a band I wanted to see live, and since I'm heading to the UK this summer, I periodically check their site to see what upcoming tour dates are looking like.

Today I find this instead of their website:

Turns out he's up on a bunch of nasty charges including conspiracy to rape a one year old! There is also a 24 year old woman up on the same charges, who's name can't be released. I hope to got it's not because it's the mother.

Hopefully the sicko got caught before he harmed many children, but a guy like that could have some awfully nasty skeletons in the closet.

Obviously very secondary, but how crappy for his band mates to have everything they've been working for their whole lives go up in smoke just like that.

he plead guilty yesterday. I must say this is probably the sickest thing I have ever read ... speechless.

The rock star, aged 36 years, is accused of two separate counts of baby rape. Watkins is also charged with conspiracy to rape another child, one count of sexual assault, one of aiding and abetting sexual assault by penetration and conspiracy to sexually assault a child. In addition he faces 17 counts of making, taking and possessing indecent images and one of possessing extreme pornographic image involving an animal.

While previously pleading not guilty, today in the court room, Watkins, while constantly looking back at his lawyers, plead guilty to the two counts of attempting to rape a baby, and various other charges including conspiring to rape another child. He denied there was any actual rape, but he did admit to making the attempt.

He admitted to sexually assaulting a child under the age of 13, and admitted to aiding and abetting his female co-defandant (who will not be named to protect the identity of the children) to sexually assault a child under 13. He also plead guilty to various charges of possessing indecent images of underage children as well as extreme pornography depicting a person engaged in a sex act with an animal.

Watkins filmed himself abusing the child, alongside the child's mother where the band stayed. He sent a message to the mother talking about wanting "to cross the line" to which the mother responded "a summer of incest and child porn" and Watkins responded back "hell yes baby."

Apparently, further details were too graphic to be published by the Daily Mirror. (More on this in a moment). The prosecution stated that by virtue of his plea, Watkins "accepts he is a determined and committed paedophile."

The women accused in the trial both admitted to having sexually abused their own children at the behest of Watkins and made their children available to Watkins to be abused.

It is assumed these women were fans of Watkins and Lostprophets and Watkins used his fame to "feed his sexual desires" says Des Mannion, the national head of the service for NSPCC Wales. Police are now searching to see if there were another children abused by Watkins.

An ITV news reporter, Rupert Evelyn, was live-tweeting the trial and, as if this story couldn't get more disturbing, he revealed that drug abuse was also involved and that one of the abused child's hair tested positive for exposure to methamphetamine. Crack cocaine was also brought up, as was discussion of whoring out the children.

Sentencing will happen on December 18th.

I have my doubts that pedophiles can be fixed. It would be like trying to cure me of having desires about woman.

I would be ok with people like this getting indefinite sentences with no chance of parole until they bury you.

Molesting children is one of the most horrifying crimes out there because it targets victims who can't fight back and then live with a life of shame and torment.

I don't care how sorry some pedo is, they don't deserve freedom unless they're willing to have their sexual organs cut off and take drugs that remove their sex drive forever.

The way I've understood it, the idea behind treating pedophiles (and all other rapists for that matter) is not so much in curing the desire, but stopping them from acting on that desire.

Not the best of comparisons, but not all priests who live in celibacy break their vows either.

All sorts of people sometimes feel like doing something terrible. It would be so easy to kill that guy, rape that girl... "Healthy" people however never go down that road, they never start acting on those urges.

(Generally even people like these start with lesser crimes; killing animals before killing people as a popular example. I'm guessing Watkins started by abusing adult fans, then teen fans...)

Plus, if there's no death penalty, it's not like there's much else you can do with them. Maybe you learn something in the process...

And I guess I'm for the idea that you always assume that people can always learn to be if not good, then at least harmless.

(As long as you don't start with the assumption that they have changed just because they've said so.)

With all that said... Wouldn't exactly break my heart if something really bad happened to this guy and the mothers. Actually, especially the mothers.

This makes me ill. OMG those poor children/babies. I typically don't support the death sentence and they likely don't have it there but this might be one instance I would be fully supportive of that measure of punishment.

What is truely sad is there are parts of the world that infant rape is all too common.

What I've never understood is how a person like this cannot understand that they are harming someone in their acts. Truly and deeply, and not only that, but an innocent person.

I mean, like CC said, I've heard that pedophiles are impossible to fix/rehabilitate because the attraction part of their brain got stuck at at a certain age. The same way straight people are attracted to the opposite sex, and gay people are attracted to the same sex, these people are attracted to certain age types, and they can't really help it.

However, I would like to think, that even if I was cursed with such a problem, my moral code would be that I wouldn't act on it. I feel bad enough wronging people in day to day life, I couldn't imagine actively harming someone to such a degree.

I mean, I'm deeply attracted to women, but I don't go around raping and beating and taking whatever and whoever I want. How is this disorder so prone to abuse?

Unless it's really two sets of problems, a tendency to pedophilia and a level of sociopathic tendencies, where they just can't understand (or don't care about) others.

Not excusing any behaviour in these musings, just trying to figure it out. Cause like I said, I would think that, even if you were cursed in such a way where you found children sexually exciting, you would have both (or really either/or) enough logic to understand your actions are harmful, and enough empathy to not want to harm.

But these monsters just don't seem to care.

I read a study (university of Ottawa) that stated that the rates of recidivism for pedophiles out side of the family is 14% for sexual, 8% for violent sexual, 28% in general. within 5 years of the first offense. Over 12 years after the first offense it increases dramatically to 15% 20% and 41% for the above mentioned categories. at 20 years it goes to 23% 35% and 46%.

You might effect a short term fix but the chances of a life long solution are low.

I firmly believe that if you commit a sexual assault against a child you never should get out. This is the type of crime where public safety of the perspective victim group has to take priority.

Why take the chance

Watkins was sentenced to 35 years today. The two women got 14 and 17 years respectively. Also, very disgusting comments of that ####### once again. I hope he rots in hell.

The rock singer Ian Watkins has received a 35-year sentence after admitting a string of sex offences involving children including the attempted rape of a baby. Two women, known only as Woman A and Woman B – who are the mothers of children he abused – were sentenced to 14 and 17 years respectively.

Watkins was jailed by Mr Justice Royce for 29 years. He will serve at least two thirds of that before the parole board can decide if he should be released. If he is released early, he will serve the rest of the jail term on licence. But the judge stipulated he will serve an extra six years on licence on top of that, bringing the total sentence to 35 years.

Royce told Watkins: "Those who have appeared in these courts over many years see a large number of horrific cases. This case, however, breaks new ground. You, Watkins, achieved fame and success as the lead singer of Lostprophets. You had many fawning fans. That gave you power. You knew you could use that power to induce young female fans to help satisfy your insatiable lust and take part in the sexual abuse of their own children. Away from the highlights of your public performances lay a dark and sinister side."

Watkins looked blank as he was led from the dock. The sentence was greeted by shouts of "yes" from the public gallery. During his sentencing hearing it emerged that the day after the former Lostprophets lead singer admitted his offences he told a female fan from prison that he was going to issue a statement saying it had been "mega lolz". He also told her he did not know "what everybody is getting so freaked out about".

Watkins, who has been on suicide watch in prison, told the woman, only identified as Samantha, that he had thought about telling the court: "Come on, it was not that bad; nobody got hurt." He said another tactic could be to "win them over with my charm" and claim: "I was off my head and do not remember anything." The hearing was told that in a second conversation with the same woman on the following day he insisted that no baby was ever harmed.

Christopher Clee, prosecuting, detailed images found on Watkins's computer. Of a total of 90 images of child abuse, 24 fell into the most serious category. He also possessed 22 images of bestiality.

The only thing I have to ask is why are these two women getting off so easy in comparison? I can't believe they'd do that to their own children. Absolutely disgusting.
