glad we didn't waste an NHL contract on either of these 2....good depth additions for Abbotsford.

Good for the heat.
I wonder if Begin was offered a 2way deal before, but took to long? Maybe Feaster always intended for him to be an AHL deal though.

Good signing, and keeps contract space open for the Flames.

Good, I thought it was odd that Bancks wasn't signed yet since we made a point to send him a QO. Does this effectively make him a UFA in the NHL?

As we saw with Taylor last season, being on an AHL deal doesn't necessarily mean that they can't earn an NHL contract later. That should at least keep them trying.

I imagine the Flames always offered him just an AHL deal and after a couple of months of the sound of crickets from other teams he finally realized better to play in the AHL than retire.

Good question. I'd like to know the answer but I'd guess that it probably does make them UFA in the NHL as we've seen a few AHL contract players signed to their team's NHL parent. These guys are usually not the type that NHL teams are clamoring for anyway so the risk of losing them is slim and if they do lose them it isn't a big problem, they should have had them to an NHL contract if they wanted to keep them in the system. Most teams probably will leave these guys alone anyway as they don't want to bother with another NHL's teams interests for such "low profile" players. You can bet that if a guy like Bancks suddenly figured things out and became the hottest scorer the AHL had seen in a few years that other teams will come knocking.

He's RFA until he meets the UFA requirements.
No different then when Giordano went overseas.

this Bancks situation is a little odd. He could have signed a two-way NHL QO for about $600K in the NHL and $60,000ish in the AHL, instead signs an AHL only deal
I'd guess his AHL deal is for more money; perhaps that would be the trade off for not using up one of the Flames 50 contracts

as for Begin, Conroy mentioned adding toughness and leadership to the Heat to help a very young roster of players

A couple injuries, and I can see the Flames buying the contract of either guy. Good to keep in the organization, and in Begin's case, will be a good guy to help develop the Heat.

I'm just happy Begin didn't get an NHL deal. Bancks looks like a career AHLer so a AHL contract for him makes sense.

More like several injuries. The Flames have a lot of extra forwards and defensemen they can call up before wasting contract spots on either player.

The only thing that makes sense is that the Heat offered a better AHL salary than the two-way deal provided. And after the Flames informed them that they'd be assigned to the Heat anyway, they took the AHL only deal. If you're likely to spend the season in the AHL, why not get the best salary you can? Flames are basically giving them a bonus for not taking up a contract. A team in a rebuild mode needs all the contracts they can get.

Let that be a warning to any player who thinks about scoring a GWG into an empty net in a meaningless game.
