I have always loved the town of Canmore. The mountain surroundings are breathtaking, and the whole outdoor sports culture appeals to my lifestyle. There is skiing, hiking, mountain biking, flyfishing, tonnes of places to take the dog out to, kayaking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing etc.
I'm thinking of moving there when I'm done school in a half a year or so. One of the problems is that realestate is extremely expensive. It's tough to find anything under 500,000 it seems. I saw a trailer for sale for over $200,000. How do people afford to live there? What do people do to earn a living? What about teachers for example, how can they afford to buy a house?
What kind of jobs are available in Canmore? I've really been priming myself to enter the oil industry with my education choices to date but I'm open to other options. What are the opportunities for someone with a finance/economics/business education? Obviously real estate has some potential but I'm sure Canmore would be a tough market to crack. I know there are some financial/investment firms in town so maybe that is another option.
If you know anything about Canmore or any of the topics I mentioned or have any advice for me I am curious to read what you have to say.

well I don't know tons about Canmore, but I will say this...it's not going to get cheaper any time soon, despite the massive amount of building going on
that 3 Sisters project East of the town (I think it's East???) is already pretty high end, and I've been told they are going to start pretty agressively targeting European and US money to build places there...can't help but think that will continue to trickle down to the townsite
so if you are thinking about Canmore...you might want to take another look at that 200K trailer
um and oh ya the crazyweed is good
maybe a certain outspoken member of the Flames blueline can give you some more info

I'm Mike ... from Canmore ... this is my dog Gnome... he's from Canmore too!
(that character jumped the shark with the above line, as soon as he started saying anything more than "I'm Mike from Canmore")

Sell Canmore Coats. Everybody up there upgrades at least once per year......
There are cheap places there, but you have to find them and most likely rent with 3 other people in a 2 bedroom apartment. I know a few girls who live there and work in the bar, and the golf courses during the day. Somehow they afford to do it.

Canmore is just Banff II.
If you want a house in the country, probably your best best is to build/buy a house out in Springbank, or just outside the city limits, then just drive into Calgary.

You can get in there for a bit cheaper to buy certian places, but you have to sign some sort of Canmore town form saying and proving that you're working somewhere in the area.
A buddy had to move out there for work just recently, and thats the deal with the more affordable housing (to buy). Not sure the in's and outs and all the details, but that an option I guess.
He was flirting with the idea of living in Cochrane and commuting daily, but thats a PIA, especially come winter.

the one canmore thing i think of, for us low-rent-folks, is to start a tour business, taking rich people hiking, fishing, or whatever.
would be fun, and maybe not a bad racket.
