I saw part of an interview on CNN today, with the Australian Ambassador to the US, on this.

The CNN anchor quickly brought up race. "Do the Australian people feel this is crime that was motivated by race?" I had to roll my eyes. Here we go again...

They've been charged as adults, the death penalty is on the table.

I would think that there will be a plea bargain which will equal life no chance of parole.

Some 89 year old WWII veteran was killed in Spokane yesterday by two ######s too.

Given the love the media has to make race cases out of anything and everything regardless of facts this one wouldn't be the biggest stretch ever.

And then went unprovoked and killed a man jogging who was BLANK. Fill in the blanks with any type of nationality, race, sexuality, religion, etc. and there should be at least an inquiry into it as a hate-crime. I'm not saying that it necessarily was, but to overlook it completely because in this situation the blank was white isn't doing any one any favours except the accused.

Yup... It looks like a lot of it ( stuff being said on FB) has to do with Obama coming out and saying if he had a son " he would look like Trayvon Martin". It does seem like a double standard is at play since here hasn't been a huge push from the media to make this a racial crime. You're right though , just some thugs being thugs. I'm sure race played a part in which person they targeted but some of these Okies on FB are just ridiculous.

I agree in principle with what you're saying. Just curious as to when people did respect life? It certainly wasn't "The Greatest Generation" which fought the bloodiest war in human history and was complicent in wide-spread bigotry and violence against African-Americans. It certainly isn't the gangsta rap culture which glorifies violence. I personally believe that we live, today, in the most peaceful and wonderful era in history. That doesn't diminish what these scumbags did, of course.

This whole story is BIG news here Down Under. Australia isn't the most racially tolerant place to begin with and this certainly hasn't helped change the perception of black culture in the USA.

While this is a horrible act, this sentence makes no sense. People statistically appreciate life more now than ever.

Can't stand the perpetuation of the myth of the 'good ol days'. Wanna live in colonial times? Ancient Egypt? WW2? Even 30 years ago murder rates were higher.

Just let it go, eh? Those days didn't actually exist. You just didn't have 24 global news and people who talked about their problems.

Just awful. Having played club baseball in Australia, I echo the quote in the article stating that the baseball community there is pretty tight. Most of those guys would relish any opportunity to go to the US to play ball in the heartlands; they're passionate about the sport and generally have a more positive attitude toward the States and Americans than most as a result. So that's the sad part: he wasn't a tourist, he was probably genuinely stoked to be there.

A teammate of mine ended up going to Texas to play, others had played in Arizona and California. I suppose it could have just as easily happened to a former teammate and that hits home to me.
