Default All Year School Zone (on 2nd St SW near 17th)

So I've lived here for years and I never speed in the St Monica school zone but I never knew it had become an all year school. So I was doing more than 30 but less than 50 - still a sizeable ticket. I went back and took a pic. Anyone else been caught and knows when it changed?

I know for sure it was year round for 2012-13. So at least a year.

So why not just make it a playground zone instead of a school zone? Seems like unnecessary added signage to add to confusion.

The problem with just making it a playground zone would be that it would start an hour later at 08:30 and run longer until one hour after sunset.

Because then we wouldn't be able to go 50 between 5pm and 1 hour after sunset.

It is time to update the school zone sign. Those people look more like senior citizens than students.

Sorry. I realized it after I posted and resized.

Thanks for the info, I guess I just never noticed the extra sign at the bottom before but I wouldn't have gone over 30 kph until after the end of June. Although I wonder, if it's going to be a school zone all the time now, what is the purpose of leaving the "school days" on, just cover that up, less signage to have to read while driving.

^ Not necessarily. My understanding is that all-year schools still give similar time off, but they spread it out more rather than two giant months in the middle of the summer.

Which then begs a question - was the school in class when OP got the ticket, or was it during a break?

It would also apply on weekends and holidays as well.

We all look fondly back at our summmers off during our school years and see them in a rose colored light, but at the time? Holy fu*k they got boring after a while; if you weren't lucky enough to be off on a trip, the fourth week sitting at home dinking around and having water fights gets pretty repetative.

Mid-August you were praying to go back to school to get some new people to make fart noises with.

School Zones are only in effect on days when kids are at school. So, even some weekdays, when there is a PD day or something, they are not in effect. For the year round schools, the weeks they have off, the school zones are not in effect.

I stand corrected. St. Monica is not a year round school. However Our Lady of Lourdes is; they are at 1916 2nd Street SW- which matches where you said you got nabbed.

While I do think it is the driver's responsibility to be fully aware of their surroundings (i.e. picking up on new things like changes to a sign), it would be helpful if they put up one of those 'New' signs when the changes were originally made.

There are, in my view, way too many signs in that photo and the font for the speed limit and applicable hours is way too small.

Isn't there some rule that deals with how many road signs can be in a particular area and spacing requirements between signs?

Our school zones are all in effect year round, no extra signage, but you only see traffic enforcement during the school year.
