I hate thieves, and hopefully someone from CP can identify them. I don't know whose bikes they are, or the guy who tweeted about it, but nevertheless, if you know who these guy's are, please report them to the police.
Theses bags look like pro's. They stole some nice bikes and I bet you it wasn't the first time. The thing I never understand, is that a thief can never resist coming back.
I'd love to do a sting where you get some ultra high end bikes and use a marginal lock and have the police waiting on the other side.

Yep Vancouver has bait bikes set with GPS. CPS is way behind the times in stopping crime.

Is there any evidence that it does actually stop crime? Have bait cars made a difference in the amount of cars being stolen? Honest question as I don't think it would make a tonne of a difference.

i have no stats to back up what i'm about to say... just personal opinion....
do bait cars make a difference? i don't think they actually deter any thief from stealing a car. however, they do provide pretty clear evidence in a trial, thus leading to convictions. the more convictions, the more car thieves are locked up. the more thieves behind bars, the less cars getting getting stolen

You can barely compare Calgary bike theft to Vancouver bike theft. Vancouver bike theft is a whole echelon above Calgary in terms of being a serious problem.

How long are car thiefs locked up? Again not looking to argue but with the catch and release justice system in Canada I'd be shocked if a car thief spent more than 24 hours in jail.
Has anyone ever had their car broken into and called the police? They don't care at all and don't even come out to investigate. More time and resources should be spent on catching thiefs that actually have victims rather than having police catch them using bait cars, but that's just my opinion.

i agree that the revolving door of the canadian justice is a joke. i have no idea how long thieves are locked up for
i know the local rcmp were on the news lately saying that the majority of the crime in kelowna (like 90+%) is the result of a handful of individuals. it goes to reason that if they can lock those guys up for an extended period of time, crime will go down... at least until they are out on bail

my truck was broken into quite a while ago (like the late 90's). even back then the police didn't really do anything - report what was stolen and if they recovered it they'd let me know. i guess i was 'lucky' - they only stole a camera (point & click film camera) and the loose change in my cup holder. more than anything else i was choked that i lost the pics on the camera .

What do you expect police to do? If you don't have any evidence at the scene (like whatever the thief used to break the window) and/or you don't have any suspects at the scene (You or someone else actually seeing the crime/noting suspicious people around the area) and/or you don't have any video surveillance...what do you really expect police to do? Come out and mystically divine who did it?
What you are asked to do is to report the stolen property online or using the callback system, the two fastest ways to get the info on your property into general police circulation. Neither method requires a visit from an officer.
All that information is checked when a pawn shop asks CPS about their inventory or caches of stolen goods are found or on several other occasions.
But yeah, you just keep on thinking that CPS don't care.

They don't care, or they're so understaffed that they're becoming incompetent. And that's not an insult, just the truth.
Drunk guy hits my parked vehicle and the police would not help in any way to retrieve the other guys insurance. I had to physically go to the guys house who hit me and con him into giving me it. The police would not return any phone calls, none, zero, zilch or lead me in the right direction. Until this day I haven't heard a thing from them.
Garage broken into, thousands of dollars worth of stuff stolen and nobody was sent out. That's police business, they need to handle it.
I also think it'd be fun to be on the bait bike/car squad. It'd be like trapping asshats all day.
It wasn't a bait car but does anyone remember when the SAS were doing a Counter Terrorism training exercise on a housing estate, there was some yob prowling cars, he tried to break into the van with the SAS members and he ended up being chased down the street by the fully armed SAS members? It totally ruined the exercise but it must have been at least slightly pleasing.

The theory that police can do little to stop this petty theft is like saying there has been petty criminals from the beginning of time and there will always be and nothing can be done about it.
The fact is that the direction and motivation of CPS or any law enforcement agency can take different shape based on leadership. Petty theft are often repeated (on/at or near the same location) and eventually can lead to bigger crimes.
I think that New York City is a fine example of a leader getting fed up and taking action on all forms of crime to clean it up. In this case, these guys have stolen some pretty high end bicycles and it's clear that it's not their first time. Why wouldn't you want to take action to stop them?
If you see a guy driving around your neighbourhood with 4 barbecues in his dirty old pickup truck you look the other way?

Despite whether or not they're understaffed, they're definitely not incompetent. Crime rates dropped again last year and have been continually dropping.
Between 2008 and 2012, the robbery rate dropped 34 per cent.

As Calgary’s latest census figures point to a city that continues to grow, there were drops in nearly every crime category, as evidenced by Thursday’s report.
Calgary’s total crime rate, which measures the volume of offences per 100,000 population, fell 6 per cent in 2012 compared to the year before.
Violent crimes, property crimes, drug offences and other criminal code offences all saw decreases. Only motor vehicle thefts saw a slight bump of 1 per cent.
I can appreciate having a bad experience and feeling you didn't get proper service. But city as a whole, crime is going down, no part to the work of CPS.

What do the police do to prior to a crime being committed to prevent it from being committed? I am not being an ass, just ignorant...
