Remote Controlled Floor Lamp
This might be considered 'Tech Forum', but I'm not sure.
Anyway, I'm looking for a floor lamp to light up my living room a bit better... but the catch is I'm looking for a lamp that has an IR remote to control it (and preferably dimmable).
All I've found is one at Brookstone.com but the reviews on its reliability have been mixed, biasing towards the 'this lamp sucks' end sadly.
I can't replace the socket with an IR-controlled/dimmable socket, so now I'm looking for ideas. Anyone come across something like this in their travels?

I don't know of any remote controlled lamps, but if you're not totally attached to using only an IR remote you could look at the Philips hue lightbulbs (and then get any floor lamp you want). You can control them through an app on an iPhone, Android, or online. They have a lot of features like dimming, colour change, timers, etc. http://www.meethue.com/

That is really cool!
I could implement it into my vacant homes (assuming a network was still available) and ensure the lights were on for every showing and then shut off!

To satisfy the requirements in the interim, I ended up buying one of these: http://www.louielighting.com/lutron-...ge-royal-plum/
Uses an IR remote so I can control it with my Logitech Harmony.

Slick!
And best part?... there's a Windows Phone app for it.
Demo: http://wmpoweruser.com/windows-phone...mation-system/
Windows Phone Store: http://www.windowsphone.com/en-ca/st...5-2d3a803f68ab
The WP app is especially neat because it supports voice commands and NFC tags... place phone on coffee table, lights change/turn on, etc.

I have 4 Hue bulbs. They are awesome and will probably out live my children. They also have stand alone lamps and led light strips that you can cut and stick anywhere now.
The geofence feature is awesome. Lights turn on automatically when I get home and turn off when I leave. You can program them as well using IFTTT to do things like flash blue when you get tagged in an Instagram or red when you get a gmail. You can also set alarms and have the bulbs do things like slowly come on and dim up with a sunset light setting to wake you up in the morning gently.

Our contractor installed two sets of pot lights a few years ago, they're in the same room, but they're controlled by 2 light switches on opposite sides of the room (finished ceiling, joists run perpendicular, no way to easily re-wire them to the same side of the room), this would be a pretty cool solution.

That one is the 'tabletop' solution. So I just hide that little box behind my entertainment center (but ensure it has a view of the couch) and when I fire the remote at it, it'll adjust the lights accordingly.
You would want something like this to put in a single gang box: http://www.louielighting.com/Lutron-...e-SPSW-600-HTH

I use these in a few rooms in my house where I use lamps to light the room. Couldn't imagine having to schlep around turning each lamp on when I come in; just grab remote, click a button, and the room is lit.

Mine were Woods brand and I believe I got them at Walmart. Most stores sell something along the lines. Mine are IR, but not dimmable.
