Deal call from Shaw, seems legit, but is there a catch?
Got a call from Shaw, they saw I had home phone and Internet, and wanted to know if I wanted to add Shaw cable. I said I was on Shaw Direct, so they offered to add Shaw Cable for $15 a month ($5 a month but that was for 25Mbit Internet, I have 100Mbit). And they will give me two HD PVRs.
Seems like it'll save me $60 a month or so, though I'm not sure what channels that includes, he mentioned a channel package but I can't find it on their site so I'll have to call back to find out.
I asked and the pricing isn't limited time either (i.e. it doesn't go up after 6 months).
Seems odd to offer an existing customer something like this out of the blue, are they trying to get people off Shaw Direct?

Not sure about the Shaw Direct part, but ask them to email you the channel lineup you would get with the package. They can customize that on their end IIRC, beyond what you might see on the usual bundles shown on the Shaw site.

Good idea, he called it the "Comprehensive" package but I don't see anything like that on the site.

The HD PVRs they give you will be junk. Ask for the newer ones, but I don't know if they give them out in such deals.

I don't think it's common, but I think they do throw out some aggressive promos from time to time. I had a Telus guy come to my door and make an equally insane offer. Currently I'm getting phone, internet and basic TV for $40/month and not on contract (same savings as you're reporting). It's set to expire October, at which time I'll be going back to Shaw (prefer the internet), but for the time being it's fantastic on the wallet. Apparently it's a rare promo that friends who called weren't able to match.

Shaw always wants you to bundle, and its a good deal from both ends if you are switching from Shaw Direct.
For them, they only have to have support for you on one side, rather than 2. Not just call in tech support, but overhead for things like infrastructure and bandwidth allocation. For them, they probably make just as much money having everyone on Shaw cable rather than charging extra for Shaw Direct, especially since they have the cable running to your house anyway.
As a triple play customer, you get a reduced price and you also get unlimited warranty on all your Shaw equipment while you maintain your package. For me, that warranty is really nice. They have covered a couple boxes for me, plus a PVR expander.

So I called them finally to confirm some stuff, they're offering the Gateway HDPVR and portal, so that's good, it's basically free rental on those for as long as I'm a Shaw customer.
The channel package was the Premium one, which is good.
The sales guy, despite me asking, told me that the pricing didn't increase, but I found out that the price is only for 3 months, after that it goes up $60 per month.
So after all that I wouldn't save anything over what I'm paying now, in fact it might incrase. I might get a few extra channels and some fancy hardware, but we hardly watch TV and the only thing we PVR is anything related to space or aliens on Discovery.
Jerks, I knew it was too good to be true.

I got a similar call.
They are upgrading my Internet to the broadband 50, upgrading to the portal and gateways and giving me a house phone. I kept asking him why I am getting this upgrade and he said because I pay my bill on time.
I asked him multiple times if my bill would increase. He said after 6 months it will then asked to put me on hold so he could talk to his manager. He came back and said it wouldn't be for 6 months, it would be forever.
I still don't understand. It just seems way too good to be true.

I foresee a post on here in 6 months along the lines of:
WTF SHAW JUST INCREASED MY BILL BY $80 A MONTH!!!!!!

Exactly.
I made sure to ask multiple times on the phone. So after 6 months I can phone them and tell them to go to the recording.

You should have either recorded the call yourself, or asked them to email you the details.
What you are saying is that in the future when you want to prove them wrong, you also want them to provide said proof.
Would you lend money to somebody, get an IOU, and then also give that person the IOU in case you need to prove the loan later on?

I actually did that (the email part).
He said he would, but didn't. I then followed up with them and the rep called me back. They said they don't do the email thing anymore because if they send you what you are getting in the email, you can tell your friends and family to get the same thing.
I then asked him to tell me exactly what I am getting and confirmed once again that my bill would not go up ever and he said yes.
Unfortunately like you said, it probably doesn't matter. Either way if my bill goes up in 6 months I will just tell them to revert to what I was getting before.
I know for a fact this rep was brand new. I could hear him talking to the guy training him and the guy training him was telling him to tell me the exact package.
I guess I will find out sooner or later.

I got a deal from Shaw about a year and a half ago. I had internet high speed extreme (25Mb/sec?) for $60+ a month. They gave me a cheap HD PVR and basic TV programming, plus my internet for $35/mo. for a year. It was a good deal but I already have Bell Satellite TV and their programming choices sucked. I live in a semi rural area so they don't offer the same programming you can get in the city. Still I saved some money during the year the deal was in effect than I had them come and take back the PVR and lousy router. What I can say is they honoured their deal not like some other providers I've dealt with.
They've been phoning me back wanting to give me TV for another $20 a mo. but I wouldn't watch their feed anyways.
