Did you report it to the police? They probably can't get your property back but at least letting them know will give them a heads up that there is car break ins in your area.

I think if you look at the Calgary Police website they have a map that list all the crimes in the city. I know for the last couple of months Bonavista has had quite a number of "Vehicle Vandalism" calls as well.
SHOCKER! Crime does happen in Bonavista!

We have this all the time in Somerset. Basically they just go up and down the street and pull on door handles. If yours is unlocked, they rifle through and steal things. I would guess this happens at least once a week...
For some reason I heard a noise at like 2-3am a few years ago and got out of bed to look. The kids pulled on my door handle and my neighbours car was open. Obviously we called the police and the kids were caught.

This is really a city wide issue. It's happened to me in Canyon Meadows (opened the car, rifled through the glove box, stole a travel flashlight/tire pressure gauge) when I left my car unlocked one night.
It's happened TWICE to my buddy in Cranston who leaves his wallet in his work truck. Both times he located his wallet within 200-300 feet of his house, emptied of cash/cards. The second time the cops even told him "lock your damn truck buddy".

Not to come across condescending or anything, but why do people continue to not lock their doors? I mean, I understand if you forget, but it seems that some people just make it common practice to not lock their doors when their car is parked on their street or drive-way.
Reminds me of this story about women getting their purses stolen while filling their gas tank: http://www.cnn.com/video/?/video/us/...-stations.kprc
Lock you doors. It's pretty simple.

MY wife had her Purse stolen out of our Van last year, and she happened to have the spare keys for my car in her purse. They waited a month before coming back for my car.
We called the insurance company about the key theft, and they said they wouldn't cover it. Seems it would be better for the insurance company to cover $1000 for re-keying rather than claims for stolen vehicles, but hey, what do I know.

I swear I locked my truck when I got home last night. Its a habit.
Must have been kids in a hurry because they took what was in the open and didn't even look in the center console.
They could have had themselves a new digital camera as well.

The kids who got caught doing this last summer in Discovery were from Queensland.
One neighbour let two boys go. He said they were just kids, "could have been our sons" and would rather get the guy who drove them over here. Car drives down the main road, kids do all the side streets and crescents.
Caught a girl, just 15. Police drove her home. No parents, lived with an older sister.
New neighbour from Cranbrook chased one a block or so, tackled the kid then got jumped by another he never saw. Those ones got away.
As the first neighbour said, I think it would be best to get the adults/older teenagers that are involved.

I don't even know what to say about this. Sad and sick.

Calgary police are looking for a group of car prowlers who desecrated the ashes of a 19-year-old crash victim.
Early on Aug. 2, police were called to the area of 10 St. S.E. and Wapta Rise after a number of vehicles were broken into. A number of items were stolen.
During the break-in spree, the thieves hit a white truck, where they found a green velvet pouch containing the ashes of a 19-year-old woman killed in a crash four years ago, and a green jacket that once belonged to her.
The heartless criminals dumped the ashes, and tossed the pouch on the ground and made off with the jacket among their ill-gotten gains.
Police say a small amount of the ashes was able to be recovered, but rain that morning washed most of them away.

The one time I had mine broken into was a couple years ago while we were rafting at down the elbow. Naturally, we had left our wallets in the car (out of sight in the center console with our phones) so they wouldn't get wet. They went through the process of popping my lock with a screw driver and stealing anything of value.
The funniest part was the wallets and phones were left in the center console and they ended up leaving my phone there. I guess it had the built in safety feature of being an absolutely terrible phone that even crackheads wouldn't steal.
The cops managed to catch the people the next day and got most of our ID back. The police reports hadn't even been processed yet.

I always kept my old dodge colt unlocked as it had no values left in it and would have cost more to replace a window then car was worth. I had people in New Brighton go through the contents twice just throwing all the papers from the glove box on the seat. They even took my cassette adapter once. I was pretty choked at that.

Well the other side is that you actually leave everything unlocked and just don't your valuables in your car.
Like what kind of idiot leaves their wallet in their car overnight?
The reality is, most are going through getting change, cash and stuff they can sell easily. If you car is broken into and they smash a window or damage a lock that'll cost you more to replace than anything inside.
Our car was broken into (it was locked) and they were able to go through the window but there are "claw" marks on the paint now where they got in. There was nothing in the car to steal so they just made it messy.

I don't understand it either. Almost all of the calls I get about this involve the vehicle being unlocked. This is almost always (but, of course, not always) a crime of opportunity. Lock your car doors when you aren't in the car and don't leave valuable stuff in your car, and this isn't likely to happen to you.

After suffering through countless break ins (maybe 12 to 15) over a few year span in downtown vancouver I just started leaving my doors unlocked. Even that didn't prevent damage but it helped. Never had anything of value stolen but it is a major pain in the rear.
That was an Tacoma pickup that was a big target. Now I have a corrolla and mini van which nobody seems to care about.

True story (I've told this story before on CP):
I grew up in Deer Ridge and my buddy lives down in Deer Run. One night, he left his car unlocked with his golf clubs in the trunk. Some kids came by, stole the clubs, then pooped in the trunk. The perpetrators then moved onto another car down the block. The broke into it, and pooped in the trunk again. This time the owner caught them, beat the #### out of the pooper, called the cops. Cops arrested the kids with the stolen items. They returned the clubs to my friend and made them clean the poo out of the trunk.
As much as I love that area, Queensland is the Forest Lawn of that area. Full of sketchy characters, crack houses, and some wannabe gang activity. Locking your car is the smart thing to do.
