Freezer Question
I have a side by side fridge/freezer. We have found that the freezer has issues with ice cream and keeping it hard. The ice cream will run out of the container after coming right out of the freezer. I've played with the temperature with no results. Other items (meat, ice, vegetables, etc) are frozen solid. I've looked behind the kick plate and removed as much dust build up as possible. I will say the coils under the fridge/freezer do have a bit of a dust build up. The side by side is a Kenmore Elite.
Any freezer experts out there with some recommendations? Any trouble shooting I can do to resolve the issue? Am I destined to have to settle for runny ice cream? Thanks for any help!

Where do you place the ice cream in the fridge? If it's on the door rack it's more likely to melt, but if placed in the back of the fridge it should stay hard since the temperature is colder in the back. Might not be your problem, but that's usually one of the typical solutions for this issue.

It melts in the door or on the rack. I'm going to stick it in the back tonight and see how it goes.

The ice cream isn't run out of the container soup-like anymore, however it is still extremely soft. When I hold a butter knife to the top of the ice cream and let go, it instantly drops through the ice cream to the bottom of the container. The ice cream provides no resistance.
Outside of pulling out the fridge/freezer and cleaning behind and underneath the unit, any other suggestions out there as to what is going on with my freezer?

Unfortunately this happens with any brand of ice cream we have purchased.

We had his problem in the condo. The fridge got delivered and the delivery guys had to take the door off to get it in the place. They put the door back on but was out of line, the seal wouldn't seal right and stuff wouldn't stay frozen. Anyways have a look at the door, make sure it is sealing properly, maybe take it off and out it back on.

I'd highly question the integrity of your frozen meat!
Our Freezer has an Ice Cream Section which is actually designed to keep the ice cream a little softer, but looks like you've already confirmed this isn't your problem.
Oh, you might also have warranty, call the 1-800 number and get them to send someone out.

Elton Brown advises never to put icecream in your freezer door, it's terrible for it. It's best kept at the back. I've noticed with icecream that once it thaws or gets too soft, it's a lost cause. It never goes back to "fresh from the grocery store" consitency.
Willing to bet the next round of icecream you buy will be fine assuming you keep it at the back of the freezer near where the cold air is blown in. That's where we keep ours and it's fine.
