Lets talk about the Black Bin
I just got a house and I need to tear out my bathroom. Having lived in condos for ten years this is my first exposure to the black bin. Can I dispose of the old tiles in the black bin? I really want to because I have nowhere else to put them right now but they gots to go.

I forget the specifics of the black bin but I think they are meant only for nomral, resedential gargabe and not construction debris.
That being said, I doubt anyone would notice if you spread your "debris removal" over a few weeks.

There's a link to the garbage rules.
It probably depends on your route but our garbage men are nazi's. They throw stuff out of our bin all the time and we can't even figure out why. So renovation materials would definitely not fly in my area.

Weird, in our neighborhood they don't even look, they just lift it and dump away into the truck.

This has been my experience as well. I would just fire away and have some garbage on top if you're worried. I don't think it matters though.

I've thrown sod out and they took it. I tried throwing out two water coolers. The first time, they took it. The second time, they took it out and tossed it on my driveway.

If I am not sure, I put it in the blue bin. The blue bin contents apparently gets sorted by hand, so let the sorters decide!
I have heard both sides with regards to styrofoam.....it can be recycled vs it can not be recycled, there fore I put it in the blue bin and the sorters can decide if it is garbage or not.
Welcome to what will soon be "three Bin-Land!"

The black bins are great. I call it the "Shawshank". You can get rid of anything given the time.

Styrofoam can be recycled, but the city does not accept it in the recycling bins. It should go in your garbage.

What I like about the black bins - dumping lawn clippings straight into it, instead of using big garbage bags.

Tank on the 1st
Bowl on the 7th
That's how you get rid of a toilet.

I'm working on a deck in the back yard and have constantly been dumping scrap lumber into mine. sometimes it's even full and boards are sticking out. They cart it away, no problem.

Bags of grass clippings (which according to the website are actually allowed). A bag of pine needles and pine comes has been specifically tossed out by them on 3 separate occasions and is now just sadly sitting in our alley. I don't get it.

Weird, like who checks the bins before they even dump them?

I know!! And it's especially annoying because as far as I can tell we're not even breaking the garbage rules. Now I'm starting to get a bit pissed off if all you guys aren't even bagging your grass clippings for crying out loud.
Our house was completely gutted and renovated before we bought it and moved in. Maybe we're black-listed because of the guy that did the reno - maybe he put all sorts of construction waste in the bin?! It's about all I can come up with as a possible explanation. Other than nazi garbage men.

I have read some people complaining about garbage pick up on the 311 app, and the city responds that you have to call to put in a formal complaint. It could be an idea to try, but I'd be too scared of pissing off the guy that collects your garbage.

You need to watch this in colder weather. Bowl came screaming out and smashed the hinge on my black bin somehow. You can get a replacement bin though gratis.
