Default Getting license in AB with outstanding fines in Ont.

Let's say I had 12 year old outstanding fines in Sault Ste Marie for driving while not licensed and for being without insurance, and at that time had racked up fines totally just over $6000. They were never paid and I was never licensed since.

If I were to move to Alberta, would that prior incident darken my chances to get licensed there or would I have to pay my Ontario fines first?

Yes, you would have to pay your fines before you could become licensed in Alberta.

Please try and let us know how it goes - I wouldn't be surprised if there is a warrant out for you for those fines.

This is a 12 year old offense. No way this guy doesn't have a warrant out for his arrest.

I think he should go try and renew his license in Alberta and video tape it for our enjoyment informational purposes.

Would he even be able to get insurance, even if he was licensed? Would these fines and the reason behind them show up when the insurance company checks him out?

I moved from SK to AB with $800 in fines owing on my record, and they swapped without issue. These included a couple "summons" tickets.

Even if you do have warrants out, theres no way they are Canada-wide. They are likely provincial only, unless you did something serious like a DUI or killed a guy with a spiked bat.

Go down to the registry and see. If they demand you pay them, pay them. If they hand you an AB licence, thank Buddah and carry on.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I've lived here almost 12 years though.
This is actually a hypothetical question for a FB 'friend' of mine.
There is not a warrant for his arrest. I'm positive of that because he's spent the last few years in jail on unrelated matters
He wants to hit the north to make money and then go back to Ontario and pay his debts, but there's no way he can make enough to quickly pay it off in Ontario.
He's done some crap things in the past but is manning up and getting out of Dodge to turn his life around. I commend him for that.
Chin up folks. At least he's not coming from Vancouver.

If they are 12 years old? No... Wiped clean. I think the max most insurance companies look back is 6 years, and only for accidents of any sort. Most minor infractions are wiped clean after 2-3 years.

The guys credit may be pooched if any of them shipped these debts to collection agencies though...
