We had crazy hail in our neighbourhood this year. I have a new roof. Ive noticed some granules have come off but I dont know if its excessive or normal for a new roof to lose some.
If I suspect I may have damage, can I call the insurance company and would they send out someone to inspect it? Is there a fee to me if there is no hail damage? Do I call my roofer first to come out to look at it then the insurance company?

You can go and look yourself.
Hail damage looks like this:
If you are uncomfortable with getting on your roof or unable to get on your roof you can report to your insurer or get a roofer.
If it was me I would report to my insurance company. After the late July/early August storm roofers are crazy busy, so it might be tough to get one to come look at your roof for free and with only the possibility of damage.
If you insurance company comes and there is no damage, no issue.
I will say that newer shingles are much more hail resistant.
One thing you can do is check the soft metals on your property. Eaves/down spouts/facia all show damage before your roof.

I'm not sure but I think your insurance company will have a list of roofers they approve of and use regularly. If so, you should probably use one of them.

This, if you are worried call your insurance provider and say you think you have hail damage/open a claim. IF there is no damage nothing happens I did this with my house.

Also your insurer may have several claims going in your area already so they might be able to tell you that your roof is probably damaged or not without even seeing it.

I don't think I would accept my insurance company or anyone telling me there was no damage if they had not seen the roof or property.

For sure. I meant more the other way around. Like if they are already doing a bunch of shingles on your street it's more likely yours are damaged too.

I was wondering what neighbourhood are you in?
More to the point I'm wondering if Lakeview got hit?

Just a warning that if you're with Meloche Monnex calling them to take a look is counted on your file. Something like 3 times in 5 years and you'll be booted and labelled a high risk client for your next insurer.

How does hail make you a high risk client? Hail is a no fault claim isn't it? You can't control the weather.

Yah, this happened to us, but luckily we only had one visit from the inspector. We had a ton of hail damage in our area and I thought I saw some issues with our shingles so I called TD meloche monnexe and the CSR said "yup, always better to be safe than sorry." Roof got inspected and turns out there are no issues. A few years later we can't get TD to insure our new house at a reasonable rate and we sign up with a new insurer and they say "it says here you have a claim" even though we never did submit a claim for hail damage.
We are with Intact now and going through a not at fault auto claim and honestly the customer service hasn't been great either, so I'm at the point where I feel like it's all the same anyways.

That's exactly what Meloche Monnexe told us as well - if we even have someone come out and take a look, that counted as a "hit" against us. We've decided to get it checked anyway as I'm pretty sure the damage is there and we will end up making a claim.
It was super frustrating with them though. Trying to get any sort of info from anyone there was almost impossible without asking for an inspection. It's probably a result of having to many people "cry wolf", but it's very annoying that they cannot even really talk about potential coverage for us (our roof is old anyway) without starting the claim process.

Doesn't Intact now have depreciation schedules for roof(s)?

It was the same with Meloche for us a couple of years ago, they wanted top open a claim just to send someone out regardless of what the inspecdtion showed. Some friends of ours were getting their roof done so we called the guy and he came over and had a look, off the books. Plenty of hail damage so we ended up opening a claim anyhow but it pisses me off that simply having an inspection done through them would count as a claim. That said, we have had zero issues with them when it comes to actually paying out. This was our second roof in 19 years and no problems either time when it came to actually getting the work done.

One of the first questions they ask you when getting a quote is "Have you ever been dropped by another insurer previously?"
Answering yes to that ups your rates.

I wonder if bagofpucks knows that he hasn't got full replacement cost on this property?
