New List - CaptainCrunch's famous female Singers from my time that still got it
I have not done one of these for a long time, but I got a big expired while watching a concert by someone that I hadn't thought about for a long time. But her collection of songs and her voice are all time legendary. So I thought why not look back to my time and my favourite female artists, and see if they're still the ones ripping it up on stage. I don't believe in putting these in order, to me its so hard to do it. But here we go, a list of what you could almost call 10 rocking grandma aged matriarchs of Rock and Roll.
1) Pat Benatar - Its hard to believe that she got her musical start later on in life. She trained classically with the goal of going to Julliard, but gave up her musical dreams, worked as a bank teller and got married. She decided at about the age of 27 to pursue a musical career and took off from there releasing her first Album in 1979. She was the latest in the Rock Genre combining a crunchy hard smokey singing voice with the amazing guitar work of her current husband Neil Giraldo. In the last 40+ years she's released 12 albums, was the first female star who's video was played on MTV and toured to this day. She was the one that got me thinking of this list as I watched her concert on Austin City Limits
2) Joan Jet - One of the greatest hard rockers in rock history. More accurately she's the grand mother of punk. One of the founding members of the Runaways where she played rhythm guitar and some lead vocals, Jett exploded onto the scene as a solo artist in the early 80's with the release of "I love Rock and Roll", she had several monster hits and Platinum Albums, she made her acting debut in the criminally under rated movie Light of Day. She continues to make Albums that still strike a cord and tour to this day at the age of 66.
3) Kate Bush - People say that she's not a rock icon, but she absolutely is, she's also extremely experimental with a powerful voice and a high level of creativity, she rode the wave of progressive rock acts, combining theatrics with a operatic voice. Notoriously reclusive she did one full tour in 1979, she would make very occasional 1 off appearances, before agreeing to a 22 date residency at the Hammersmith apollo. I challenge any one to not fall in love with her voice in running up that hill, or Withering Heights
4) Anne Wilson - One of the most powerful voices that we've seen anywhere. Anne and Nancy Wilson burst onto the scene in the late 70's with power rock songs like Barracuda, crazy on you and Magic Man. The band Heart went through a decline but bounced back by going more main stream and poppy, but Anne's voice continued to power the band with hits like What about love and never. The band faded somewhat in the late 90's and they chose to do smaller shows, and featured a more folksy sound but Anne's voice continues to be powerful to this day. I sill think that Heart's performance of Stairway to heaven at the Kennedy centre salute to Led Zeppelin is one of the best cover songs that I've ever seen.
5)Melissa Etheridge - Discovered in a bar in 1981 she exploded on the scene with a really unique mix of Country, Rock and Folk. Its like going to a fusion restaurant that has a menu of Chinese/Italian food with a extra helping of Carolina reaper peppers. Her songs were the ultimate in feminist rock featuring crunching guitar cords and Melissa's smokey power voice. She drove through the 80's with hits like "Bring me some Water", "Like the way I do", "I'm the only one" and more. She faded a bit in the late 90's and reinvented herself with a more folksy acoustical sound but still continues to Rock into her mid 60's.
To be continued tomorrow

I've watched that Heart performance covering Led Zep dozens of times over the years, it's amazing. When you have Robert Plant shedding tears you've done something right.
Pat Benatar and her hubby once crashed on my coach after a party, they came with a couple of my friends and just in passing introduced themselves as Neil and Pat, I didn't even know who they were until a buddy told me.

Speaking of Kate Bush, it was a joy watching Gen-Z kids discover her genius for the first time after Running Up That Hill was featured in Stranger Things and became a monster hit 35+ years after its initial release. Kate herself was stunned at how much it blew up and actually came out of hiding to do an interview with BBC Radio about it.
