I'm glad that we had the half year lock out. It really seems like they fixed a lot of things.

Again, the lockout had nothing to do with lowering salaries for the top end players. It is going to kill the mid level guys (as you can see by the current free agent list of unsigned mid level players). The top talent is going to get paid and rookies or players on ELC are going to play, mid level guys are going to sign for the minimum or not play.

Not bad for a 7th round pick.

Figured he'd get around the 6M range, not that he's worth it though IMO.

I agree that top end talent would not have an effect, i just don't see Pavelski as top end talent in my eyes. Top end talent to me is first line, border line franchise players. Pavelski is a very good 2nd line player making $6 million.

Thornton, Marleau and Pavelski combined make up for almost a 3rd of their cap space.

He'll be 30 when this contract kicks in. Will be interesting to see where San Jose is in 3 years

Thornton, Couture and Pavelski as their top centers; what an embarrassment of riches. Pavelski actually plays more minutes than Thornton, mainly due to being a top unit PKer

Then Gomez as their 4th line center. Nothing special anymore, but at $700K, you get a guy who wins faceoffs

Decent deal; Id say the length is about 1 year too long and about $1MM too high though.

A 4 year $21MM deal would have been better IMO.

About a mill too high, but still a great player.

Not really... Thornton and Marleau (and Boyle) are UFA's when Pavelski's salary goes up from 4M to 6M next year.

SJ extending Pavelski at this time is an indication that Thornton (35) and/or Marleau (33) and/or Boyle (37) have entered Cammalleri country*.

2 out of 3 will not be getting 6-7 M next year... at least not from SJ. SJ has Pavelski and Couture making 6M /yr starting next year and for the next 5 years going forward.

*Cammalleri country: ageing former star player whose skills are in decline playing out the last year of their big contract and not likely to be extended by the current team at anywhere near their current contract. They will be available for draft picks at the trading deadline for a team that thinks it has a chance to win the SC.

That's 6 million well spent IMO. Pavelski is one of those players you pay to keep around. This is a player I hope Monahan shapes up to be.

Yep. The league is trending to elite/top level players making the majority of the money and 3rd/4th line players making less than $2 million on shorter term contracts. There are some quality UFA players that are wallowing in free agency because teams right now don't want to commit top dollar or term to players that are not elite. These guys are going to have to accept lower dollar/term contracts and hope they can parlay that into a career season and raise thier worth for the next deal.

And yet, they still have not come close to winning a cup. Something just isn't right.

Too high IMO. He's a great player, but he's topped out as a 60 point 2nd line centre. He's also 29 now. In 3 years time, this contract could be pretty painful.

Back to back conference finalists in 2010 and 2011 isn't bad. Not sure how you define "coming close", but I think they have done alright.
