Feaster on the Fan 960 5pm MT Aug 1, 2013
coming up right now... will try to summarize
- never was concerned that they would get Brodie signed, went back and forth a couple of times, glad to have it done
- TJ is a talented player, he improved as he got more ice time, thought toward the end of the last year his "snarl factor" picked up... anxious to see if it continues to start this season
- classifies Brodie as an "internal fuel" guy (meaning that he drives himself without coaches pushing him)
- 3 year deal didn't make sense for Flames or Brodie
- 1 year deal was concerning from Flames point of view due to arbitration and
- short term contracts help players stay hungry and try to prove something
- short term also provides flexibility and are easier to move than long term contracts
- blue line battle is going to be crowded... never can have too much depth...
- Abbotsford will be a young team... thinks some are ready to be thrown into the deep end of the AHL
- Bancks negotiations are ongoing
- still having conversations with other teams... talks have slowed down.. focus on trades not any Free Agents
- cites one of the reasons for signing Jooris was right shot... said they doubled the number of right shots in organization with Jooris and Knight

The bolded is great to see that they are focusing on that aspect and at the same time, super scary how sorely shallow the RW and RH depth was after Iginla. Still need 2-3 more in the system for my liking though.

Really glad to hear they're still going to try and keep Bancks in the organization. I think if they get him under contract (either AHL SPC or NHL contract), he'll be the new captain of the Heat. No question.

I agree with thinking he will be the next captain. Who would you say would be the A's? Also, though I highly doubt Bancks won't get signed, but who do you think would get the C if Bancks doesn't return? Perhaps Nemisz, though I think organizationally they still look at him as having NHL upside, and I don't think giving likely call-up at some point would even get a letter (though I may be wrong in my thinking here).

Let's say Bancks takes over captaincy from Laing. I'd say Breen would be a lock to get an A. Probably Nemisz. Maybe Street. Maybe Ramage. Maybe Bouma.
If Bancks doesn't get captaincy, I could see Breen getting the C.

isn't Ramage going back to the NCAA?
I bet Nemisz makes the team out of camp

also, Ramage has signed a contract and thus couldn't play NCAA even if he wanted to

Pretty boring summer not really what I expected however when it is all said and done i can't complain. The flames appear to be doing the rebuild the right way at least at the start
I was/am still hoping the flames can fleece a team looking to move salary

A friend of mine just texted me that he ran into Feaster at a downtown food court half an hour ago and had a chance to talk to him. Feaster said that they are still talking to other teams about a top-line centre trade possibility prior to the season opening.

I know. But seriously, is there anything left to be traded for a top-line centre? I seriously doubt that...

I can't think of anyone who will probably be a #1 center, is young enough (20-25ish) and available. #1 or not, I hope we don't mortgage the future to acquire someone who is in their late 20s.

I mean, really. The article in the link below ranks top 10 centres, which is somewhat subjective, but accurate in the whole, I think. What do we have that can be traded for another team to give any of these guys up? Excluding some totally ridiculous propositions (e.g. several first-round picks in a row etc.) we do not have a player/prospect/pick combo that could be reasonably offered and considered this season.

Why, not to mention how, would a team thats likely going to slot in between 20-30 get, or even want, a top 10 centre?
Dont look at the top 10, look more like 25-40. Centres in those slots can potentially move up in status playing on a top line and they can be acquired in more flexible ways.

Can you think of a reasonable trade in the 25-40 range?

I don't think the Flames can get a guy that is a bonafide 2nd line center via trade let alone a 1st line center without giving up significant assets.
I also don't think the Flames will get a guy that is under 25 years old unless he is buried on the depth chart and/or has fallen out of favor with his current team. Luke Adam may be an example of this but he is far from a lock to be a top 6 center.
One guy the Flames may get reasonably cheap is Tuomo Ruutu (assuming he waives his NTC for Calgary). Hurricanes are looking to shed salary and Ruutu was once considered a solid 2nd line center. He is definitely past his prime, but if the Canes don't want too much back...
Phoenix may be a team to watch with the signing of Ribiero and if Domi can make the team, they may move one of Vermette or Hanzal (unlikely)... though the price will be relatively steep for the Flames.

Feaster did drop hints - he's talking to teams that have cap problems which narrows the list a bit.
Ruutu - might be too post apex, though he didn't use that buzzword from what I heard. Can't see him moving to CGY though. Believe they are trying to lose Pitkanen to free up dough for Hainsey but I digress. Zac Dalpe is a guy that could be buried like Luke Adam and need an opportunity to show his top 6 capability.
Luke Adam - like it but does he step in as a top 6 C? Would like to audition him and if we could deal someone like Nemisz for him, sign us up. Bad skater though which may hold him back. Jason Allison was a bad skater though.
Jacob Josefson - could he be available once NJ signs Henrique? I see him as a Backlund kind of player and might be worth a flyer on. Not expensive to acquire.
Marcus Johansson - playing LW with Caps right now but if the Caps are in the Grabovski sweepstakes, he could be available and not too many teams have the room. Not good in the faceoff circle but would be a top 6 guy and he could learn faceoffs from Conroy which might help. Cost to acquire - would be higher than Josefson.
Matt Read - plays all 3 forward positions and Weisbrod likes him according to reports. They need to dump salary (Meszaros?) maybe we can take Meszaros on in order to get Matt Read?
Fleischmann from FLA? Would he waive to come here? Probably not but FLA wants to dump cap and we have the room.
Montreal - have depth at C with Plekanec, Briere, Desharnais, Eller. Don't believe Eller or Desharnais are 4th line Cs, maybe we could shake one loose, depending on acquisition cost?
