Wedding Reception Venue - Suggestions
Hey all,
So I've taken the plunge and am getting married, now we need to find a venue for our reception.
The idea is to keep the reception very casual, we want a bit of a party atmosphere where people can mingle and just enjoy themselves.
While that sounds all well and good, finding a good venue isnt the easiest thing in the world it seems.
Many here on CP are married or have been to weddings recently, what did you like? What intrigued you? What sucked? What suggestions do you have?
At the moment we're leaning towards Heritage Park, but it never hurts to get other opinions and suggestions.
Much appreciated.

Ranchehouse in Cochrane - it's a beautiful rustic setting (not unlike Heritage Park, I imagine); gorgeous backdrop for pictures, food was very good. They have multiple halls that can accomodate different size groups, or different tastes (casual or formal). Been to two weddings/receptions there, would recommend highly

I had mine at the Glenmore Inn and I always recommend this place to others.
Oh, congrats! People complain about married life but it's actually fantastic!
Is your ceremony at Heritage Park as well?

Thanks! No, just the reception.

How many people?
Lougheed house looks cool. I think you're capped at around 100 though.

I've been to a reception at Heritage Park, specifically Gasoline Alley, was really nice and the food was great (presume it's catered by them?)
We did the golf course thing - Glen Eagles in Cochrane. We really liked it there, but doesn't help you if you want it in Calgary somewhere.
I've heard good things about Hotel Arts as well, other than the price that is.

About 140 is the estimated ballpark.

We're looking at the Wainwright hotel, but yeah, we want to keep it in Calgary.

Depending on the amount of drinking you anticipate, pick somewhere that there is cab access. The Ranche may be great venue and location, but if everyone's from Calgary, they have to drive out to Cochrane, and home, either there's not going to be as much drinking (along with people leaving early to make the trek back home), or, some in attendance may put themselves and others at risk by rolling the dice and trying to get that car home after having one too many.
Stampede Grounds has the Rotary House for such events. Friends have used community halls as well. Outside of getting a liquor license, not a lot of hassle there.

The Royal Inn seems to be really well priced, and the quality of food is quite good.

I should also say, along with Gov's being on the absolute restricted list, Community Halls are out as well. She does not want a community hall reception.

Where? When?
If in Calgary maybe the Zoo, Telus World of Science, or Canada Sports Hall of Fame.

The problem is that you can't get 100 people into one room at the Lougheed house. My brother got married there and almost half the guests couldn't see the head table. It's a cool location for a very small wedding.

Hotel Arts downtown was really good. Cool atmosphere and the food was quite good. Same with The Ranche in Fish Creek.

Had ours at a community hall. Decided to go that way so we weren't restricted on use of space, decorations and stuff. Parking was easy for folks and we had a few nearby hotels for people to stay at.
Make sure you find out if a liquor licence is supplied or if you need to get one. I can't remember the procedure.
And congrats Locke! Holy crap!
