Icon45 Leafs sign Nonis to 5 year extension

Bets on how many years into these 5 before he gets fired?

SN 590 The FAN@FAN5906m

#Leafs have signed GM Dave Nonis to a five-year extension

Lolwhat? That was fast. You don't even wait one season before you extend him for 5??

He was the GM when they made the playoffs though, so I wonder if they'll build him a statue.

Give him security, make him feel confident in his position. It's a smart business move. Anyone knows he can be released at any time and MLSE can afford the compensation.

its a bad move because almost every move he has made so far has been horrible

but in reality the Leafs print money, so when they buy him out after missing the playoffs it's only cash

So... getting lucky by having your mediocre team sneak into a playoff spot (in a shortened season) with a team still largely constructed with the guys of the previous guy = 5 Year Contract Extension?

Please Maple Leafs don't ever change.

I still don't understand why they fired Burke. Was it his personality? His methods? It just doesn't make any sense considering he put that core together.

Uh, supposedly he still had three years left on his original contract, so that's 8 years.

Well, that's just stupid. Were they afraid they might lose him.

There are rumours that he really wanted to trade for Luongo, and Ownership didn't... but who knows

Supposedly he clashed with a lot of the new MLSE board (George Cope in particular) and they didn't like his personality representing the team or to deal with.

leafs got lucky making it into the playoffs and I'm not really sold on Nonis. That being said, I did like the Clarkson signing since it'll help with their absymal shot differential totals, but keeping Bozak, who drags down Kessel over Grabovski is a bad move. Bernier was a good acquisition, but I think Frattin can become a legit top 6 player.

They don't even know if the Clarkson contract will sink that team yet

That makes much more sense than 8 years:

Chris Johnston@reporterchris2m
Dave Nonis tells Prime Time Sports his previous #leafs deal was ripped up. So the five-year "extension" starts today.

Why would it be ripped up?

Nonis deserved a permanent GM job. When you look back, he did a pretty good job setting the Canucks up. Most importantly he stayed the course and didn't back down to pressures to make short sighted moves with that roster that eventually paid off after he was summarily dismissed for not making them.

Nonis got the goalie

Nonis' bottom 6 signings were horrible

this is the bottom 6 the year before Nonis got fired

Raymond/Ritchie/Shannon
Isbister/Pettinger/Cowan

other depth signings that played in other years

Marc Chouinard, Jan Bulis, Josh Green, Tommi Santala

on defense he had Mike Weaver and Aaron Miller playing major minutes

the difference between Nonis and Gillis is that before Malhotra's injury the Canucks bottom 6 was one of the best in the league, and probably most importantly the defense is now a strength with even losing guys like Ohlund and Salo who were top 4 mainstays in Nonis' tenure
