Im looking to pick up some more ice time while Im in town. I have seen the city websites for shinny times. Is there anywhere else with potential times listed? Anyone know of any organized by others other than the city?

Haven't been for a while but the Trico centre has shinny mon-fri at 11am.
Usually has a good turn out with all skill levels.
(Trico is just off Anderson Rd in the SW, just behind South Centre mall).

Trico, South Fish Creek, WinSport, various other City of Calgary rinks have frequent public shinny ice times. City of Calgary has all the schedules listed on their website. Private rinks have schedules listed on their specific sites as well.

I played with these guys last night. They were a good group of guys. I had a pretty good time. Although being off the ice for months I was pretty gassed after like 3 shifts. Anyways I would recommend these guys to anyone who was looking to pick up a few more shinnys during the course of a week.

No idea, but it's good to hear you're on skates after the laminectomy. I'm slated for one in the spring.

Unless you like playing with 15 players per side, having a "ref" and paying $15, then I would avoid his shinnies.

I dont support individuals that make massive profit off running a shinny. Especially when you dont get enough shifts/ice time to make the cost even worth it.

Well 8-10 bucks is what you would usually pay I suppose.. but always having 2 goalies and playing with enough guys to get a sufficient break between shifts is worth a few extra bucks.... not to mention playing with a bunch of good dudes and not guys that stay out 10 mins+ a shift.

Nonetheless , I havent been on the ice in a while ( hell I havent done any activity for a while) so I was done after a few shifts anyway.

If the guy makes a few bucks organizing these and makes thinks run smoothly then so be it. I have had a lot of experience organizing ice times and adult games. It's not easy. I wish I could make some money doing it.

I have been to a few where it is 19 guys a side. It used to be $10 a head, but I left when they started charging $15. The amount of money these guys are making is crazy.

last night we had 13 guys a side and 2 goalies... 3 lines of forwards and 2 lines of D. I think that's pretty fair.

Also , just my talking to rinks and looking at their online schedules and prices anyone of us could do the same thing and make a profit even at charging 10 bucks a head. The key is none of the people that bitch want to put forth the time and effort to organize it.

Also, everyone complains when the guy running it pulls in a bit of profit when there's a good turnout. But if another guy running a shinny charges a reasonable amount and doesn't get a full turnout and ends up losing money, nobody cares or offers to pay more to make up the cost.

That's the way shinnys always are, everyone wants them to be perfectly tailored to their criteria of location, cost and amount of players. That's why most guys who put all the time and effort into organizing shinnys eventually say **** it, and just tell people "Look, Here's the time, location, cost and range of players that may show up, either show up or don't" lol.

yup.. I mean back home our shinny ( or pick up times) are 10 bucks. We have 2 times. 1 is Wed night 900-1030pm and the other is Friday 6pm-7:15. The cost is 10 bucks. The Wed night they rarely have 2 goalies. When there arent enough goalies there are 20 skaters. When 3 goalies show up we have 11 skaters ( total) . On Friday night .... there are always 7 or 8 kids under the age of 10 on the ice "playing" with their parents. Its sucks. I tried to organize contract ice on Friday nights... 300 bucks is my cost , always have 20 skaters and 2 goalies. It's 15 bucks cost but people think it's to much. So the choice is pay 10 bucks and have a ####ty time or pay 15 bucks and have a great time.

How much does it cost for an 1hr 15min ice time down there?

Yeah, that's the toughest part about organizing shinnys. Guys who play regularly only want 6 or 7 guys per side, and want you to only invite 13 or 14 guys to ensure there isn't too many. But when 3 or 4 guys bail, they don't offer to make up the cost.

I actually think 10 per side is pretty fair ... gives you a decent break and still gives you good ice time. Especially if you play with a bunch of guys you know... that way you know the guys wont stay out for 10 mins at a time.

Yeah, 10's good. At least with ten, you tend to get the guys shifting as lines together, which tends to keep people honest about shifts. It's when you get the odd numbers that you tend to get the annoying guys that just stay out, but because guys are shifting one guy for another, they can get away with it.
