Nice read. I think we're all wondering what will become of the players that cost us the face of the franchise. It will definitely be interesting to watch.

Two typos! game = came and Night = Knight

Personally I hope none of them become the next "face" of the franchise,

I hope the group of 18-22 year old players in our prospect base right now end up defining this generation of the franchise, and in a good way unlike the "young guns" era.

IMO the NHL is now built on depth and none of the successful team have that true Iginla type face.

Who is the face of the Blackhawks? Toews? Kane? Keith?

Face of the Bruins? Bergeron? Chara? Krejci? Lucic?

Face of the Kings? Kopitar? Doughty? Brown? Quick? Richards?

Hell look back at the 1989 team. Who was the face of that team? MacInnis? Niewy? Gilmour? Mullen?

My hope is that we build a solid roster that doesn't rely on having a face.

I was always of two minds about trading Iginla and carrying on the legacy of Nilsson or having him retire a Flame. Now that it's done, it will be fun to watch these three players and see if they can become NHL players.

Nice write up good to hear about Ferland.

I agree, but it wouldn't bother me if Player A became the face of the franchise and the rest of these prospects were all very good who could also be considered the face of the franchise individually or collectively if Player A wasn't around.

I like the hint of the Bouwmeester transaction lineage and its current state in comparison to the Iginla one. I think there is a strong possibility that we see as many positives (or more!) from that trade as we do from the Iginla one.

It suddenly makes me want to go backward and track the Bouwmeester lineage thread to its origin.

Each line comes from the line below it:
- Reto Berra, Mark Cundari and Emile Poirier was acquired in the trade that sent Bouwmeester to STL.
- Bouwmeester was acquired by the trade that sent Jordan Leopold and a third round pick to FLA
- Leopold was (re)acquired in the trade that sent Lawrence Nycholat (waivers), prospect Ryan Wilson (undrafted UFA) and Montreal's 2009 second-round pick to the Avs.
- Montreal's 2009 second-round pick was acquired in the trade that sent Tanguay to Montreal (we also acquired the pick that resulted in Nemisz in this trade).
- Tanguay was acquired in a trade that sent Leopold and 2 seconds to the Avs.
- Leopold was acquired from the Ducks for Andrei Nazarov
- Nazarov was acquired in a trade that sent Michael Nylander to the Lightning.
- Nylander was acquired from the Hartford Whalers along with James Patrick and Zarley Zalapski in exchange for Gary Suter, Paul Ranheim and Ted Drury
- Gary Suter, Paul Ranheim and Ted Drury were all drafted by the Calgary Flames.

To me all of those teams have/had "a guy".

Weather the guy was the best player, the best leader, the most clutch, or had the most Storied career, or they were just the first super star to get there. Those are the faces we would all identify with those teams. Hence "Face of the Franchise".

Can you imagine this place if it were around when the Flames traded their best player (Nilsson) AND a 3rd round pick for two 2nd round picks?

They'd be calling for Cliff Fletcher's head!

At least Feaster got a 1st rounder for Iginla. Sure you could say different players, but Nilsson was still in his prime at the time.

Good read Bingo thanks.

The Flames have turned the page on the Iginla era and almost every core player from it is traded or retiring. Time for the young guys to rise up and duplicate the success of the franchises Supermatt mentioned.

Going to be an exciting ride for us fans to watch these kids develop.

^ by todays standards it was a first and 2 seconds, was it not?

I know Neiwwendyk went somewhere in the 20's and I can't even remember who the other 2 guys were .

don't think so

a web site has him as a center, but we've always listed him versus Loob, Mullen, Fleury and Iginla for best RWs in team history.

He played a lot with Guy Chouinard in the day who was the center.

I always thought of Nilsson as a centre as well and was moved to the wing later in his career. Could be wrong though. Didn't we steal him from the Jets when they joined the NHL?

Lanny was on Guy's right side, and has 66 reasons to thank Guy for that

It's funny.

You could honestly say that this will be the first season in the Calgary Flames history where we don't have a top 10 (5 even) RW in the NHL.

After a storied history on RW that is easily the weakest position of depth on our roster and in our prospect base right now.

You need a face of the franchise to sell tickets, and connect with your fans. FYI - in 1989 - there was this guy with a big mustache that everyone connected with as the face of the team.

No, you need a winner. The 1989 Stanley Cup Winning Calgary Flames would have sold out without a "face".

I'm pretty sure if you go to fans of each fanbase in the NHL they could tell you who their current "face of the franchise" is. A lot of them, like Tampa, will have posters, billboards and giant banners showing their star player (Stamkos). Lecavalier's face is all over that team too but now that he is a Flyer it is all Stamkos.

The Hawks could have a toss up between Toews, Kane and Keith as to who their face is, as all three of those guys are equally important to the team, but only one of them is the team captain.

Bruins is Chara all the way... have you seen the guy? How can you miss that?

Kings guy is Kopitar. Quick may be the more important player now but that team has been riding Kopitar's image for a long time.
