Default Teacher Forces Kids to Hate Each Other

A very interesting experiment conducted by a teacher in the 1970. Seems pretty progressive for a teach of that time.

The essence is this: she recreates segregation in her classroom by telling the kids that brown-eyed people are stupider than blue-eyed people. Brown-eyed kids aren't allowed to do certain things at recess/lunch. Later their roles are flipped.

The video is 14 minutes long but interesting from a historical context. There are a few 'N words' dropped but it's by 3rd graders in the later sixties/ early seventies.

I wonder if teachers could get away with something like this today? Many of the students seems really upset and likely the protective parents of today would being calling the school to put a stop to it before the lesson could be learned.

Ms. Jane Elliott's "brown eyes, blue eyes" experiment in 1970 (the third one after her first in 1968). This "Eye of Storm" documentary was made by William Peters in 1970 for ABC News and later included in the documentary "A Class Divided" (1985), which included a class reunion (of 1984.)

Love it, this is a great experiment and shows people how easy it is to get carried away in racist sentiment.

Of course today, she would have been fired, sued, probably jailed, been ridiculed on internet forums, digitally stalked and then committed suicide

We did this 20 years ago in grade 5 or 6 as well as another one involving rich and poor and the rich getting to make all of the laws and distribute most of the wealth.

Are you sure that was an experiment in your class, or are you thinking of capitalism?

This was brought up around the time of the Abu Ghraib torture scandal. Essentially it's a great experiment for showing that most people who say "I'd never do that" can actually be total monsters in the right circumstance.

Basically this is the kid-version of the Zimbardo prison experiment which is without doubt one of the most fascinating psychology experiments ever done (imo).

In terms of today, you couldn't even do anything remotely similar to the kid study (even with adults). Ethical standards are in place to make sure the fun/damaging stuff can't happen anymore. Once you get into organizing your own psychology experiments in a university setting it's incredible the hoops you're required to jump through to make sure nobody is even offended, let alone harmed.

Yeah we did something similar, but our teacher lost control and we built an extermination camp for Gingers in the school basement. We told every one else in the school that it was a wallet factory.

Of course today you wouldn't have the teacher, fellow students, other parents and the child who was kicked by his father... laughing about it.

So, win some lose some?
