Age of our roster
Can some of you wizards put together lines for us with ages by the player names? Seems like we are getting young and I'm interested in our age average. Are we 4-5 years younger now than 2 years ago?

Still takes a lot of assumptions as to what the lineup will look like, but I can tell you that it won't be 4 years younger.
At it's height a couple years ago, the average age climbed into the mid 29s.
As of right now, it looks like it will be in the low 27s. There are a couple of older players that may not be there next year, including Jackman, Cammalleri, and McDonald (if both Berra and Ramo impressed).
If any of them weren't in the lineup. it would slip into the high 26s for sure. And only a few teams are in th 26s each year.
McGrattan is over 30 as well (and I still have him in the lineup).
Actually, looking at it more, very strong chance that the age will be in the 26s - maybe even low 26s if Monahan sticks

How long before media pundits stop using phrases such as the "veteran Flames" and "bare cupboard?"
My guess is another year at least.

Also, looking at these lines, we should probably still trade a winger before the start of the season.

Younger and bigger.....I like seeing the size come with the youth as we have seen that the small youth wont accomplish much in Edmonton

I know they were thrilled with Begin's effort and heart last year, but with Knight and Monahan added to the mix, I would be a bit surprised if they sign him.

Steve Begin and Tim Jackman should be apart of the Flames roster next year in no way, shape, or form.

I think you guys are forgetting David Jones.
Add his 28 years into the equation. Either way, around late 26-27
Still sad that all these simpletons on the nhl site and HF boards still refer to us as old, washed up, and of "no future". Though likely the same people that could only name Iginla and Kiprusoff from our roster. It would make conversations more bearable if people would do their homework on a team before opening their traps. Oh well, what can you do.
Speaking of younger players, I for one am quite excited at the prospect of Granlund coming over this season and making his debut with the Heat. Played well last year and was amongst the top 3 scorers in the WJC with J. Hockey. Fingers crossed that we end up with the better NHL player, of the two siblings. Though pretty unlikely.

I like the lineup, but I think the bolded players need to be moved for other players like those recently acquired. I could get behind a team that played a physical in your face brand of hockey and ground the opponents into the ice each night, even if they lost most of the time.

avg age - year
29.2 - 07/08
28.3 - 08/09
28.1 - 09/11
29.2 - 10/11
28.3 - 11/12
28.4 - 12/13
Average age is current 26.9
Edit: IMO still more players to be traded from now till trade deadline; Stajan (29) Stempniak (30) Cammalleri (31) Jackman (31) & Begin (35) - thus avg age will drop

- The average age of NHL teams last season was 27.451
- Last season the average age of the Flames was 27.779
- Based on the current NHL roster players (Backlund, Baertschi, Brodie, Butler, Cammalleri, Galiardi, Giordano, Glencross, Hudler, Jackman, Jones, O'Brien, Smith, Stajan, Stempniak, Kipper, MacDonald) the average age of the team is 28.444. This would make the Flames the NHLs 4th oldest team.
- But that number will go down assuming Kipper retires and the vacant positions are filled with prospects. However, given the number of changes expected this is a moot exercise for now.
- My guess is we end up around 26.5 or so.

I've never gotten around to it ....
but I've always thought it would be smart to build an excel based analytic that brings in ice time for all the NHL, sorts into teams by having the top 9 forwards, top 4 D and top goaltender, and then average their age.
I don't care how old McGrattan is for example, or the 7th dman.
What is the average of the 14 most important players on each and every team.

Maybe even have a weighted system? An Age/TOI ratio would go a long way to helping figure out what a good team looks like.

Or even do an exact calculation of average age, but factoring in time on ice for everyone. It might be fair to leave goalies out, since they play the whole game, and age is less of a factor for goalies.

Begin and MacGrattan are both UFAs, so they shouldn't be counted when factoring age.
