Default Phoenix is closing in on a $5.7 million/6 year extension for Mike Smith

Smith's extension with the Coyotes is still being finalized. Sounds like closer to $5.7 per year x 6 yrs.

Not a bad haul for a player who was closing in on 30 and hadn't made much of a name for himself as anything but a 1b.

A single really good season in a system that seems favourable to goalies and he's going to make 30M+ now. Not saying Phoenix had options or Smith wouldn't have made similar money elsewhere, but with contracts like this it's easy to see why the league needed 2 lockouts so close.

Friedman said the Canucks were kicking tires on Smith. Another option gone for them!

There was a rumour going around Saturday that Gillis might jettison both goalies and start over with Mike Smith, who is a former client from the GM's agent days.

That was forcefully denied.

I think this is a little bit much for 1 really good season. Will be interesting to see the trends for goalies moving forward.

I doubt it. I don't think he is or will be looking at any goaltenders this summer. Think he wants to see what he has in Ramo/Berra. Next year might be a different story.

You sure we wont flip our 6th to Phx for the rights to Smith. There is still 5 hours to go.

I don't think it is necessary to shell out this kind of dough on a goalie with system they play in Phoenix.

Dave Tippet will make any goalie rich.

I would let him walk and get someone else. Mike Smith was chopped liver in Tampa. Bryzgalov went from hero to zero when he left Phoenix.

I really do think their system makes goalies look good.

The same can be said for the Trotz system in Nashville and the Lemaire coached Wild

The system does make the goalie look better than he is, BUT Mike Smith is still a legitimate #1 goalie in my eyes and they aren't really overpaying him compared to other starting goalies...especially when you start looking at the numbers he puts up. This is a good deal for both parties.

Lol....oh Gillis, try trading 1 goalie first, before you try trading 2.
