The Calgary Flames organization's response to 2013 Floods
One of the things we often hear from players is how they love the fans and how they "like to give back to the community". This thread is to show appreciation for current and former Flames personnel that have actually been involved with the clean up. I'm not going to make any assumptions or accusations - however the only player that I've seen pictured on twitter showing up at a random house was none other than Lanny MacDonald.
Correct me if I'm wrong - but I think they need to step up their efforts to Calgarians. I can't recall hearing about too many NHLers pitching in. So let's set the record straight!
If anyone needs a hand or knows where all the clean up action is, share that here as well.

Eh? Are you really trying to 'spank' the organization?
Also, are you out there helping out?

The Flames organization does so much for this city on charity front that I can't even figure out how one could start to question their commitment to the community.
The Flood recovery is not about you getting some photo ops with your favourite Flames.

The almuni has been all over the place helping out: Kennedy - his house was hit hard and he's still helping out everywhere, Macoun, Fleury, Peplinski... a lot of those guys are doing it without fanfare. You don't need to post on Twitter that you're helping. Just got out and do it.

Biggest problem this city has faced
Helping the community doesn't only consist of showing up to golfing tournaments. I haven't even heard of players making donations. Nothing.
Truth hurts. If you want to say you like helping the community - where are you during the city's greatest hour of need?

Is it that offensive to make a thread to show appreciation to those who are helping? Unbelievable how trolls have accused me of wanting photo opps. Grow up

What are you implying, the biggest problem this city has is getting people out to volunteer, or that the biggest problem is you haven't seen any Flames volunteering?
The first, totally not true, more volunteers than we know what to do with. And even if the second statement were true, how is that a big problem for the city?

This is nonsense. Flames players were calling the org asking how to get to Calgary so they could help, but the org told them to stay home until things settled down a bit. It was mentioned in on of the pressers the flames held during the flood.

The thing is, a lot of people donate without fanfare. You haven't heard of players donating, doesn't mean they are not doing it.

You show appreciation to those who help by trying slam those who don't? That's an incredibly ineffective technique. I'll see if I can convince some Flames to swing by your place and sign a stick for you while the rest of us clean up around here.

There's nothing wrong with that. These are big boys, if there's some Flames players who are here just to make money and not give back - they should live with the fact that this will reflect on them. Absolutely no shame in pointing out those who don't help.

Eh? I wasn't talking about you. I was talking about the people who were busy tweeting away at how much they are helping.
But that's cool. I'll get in the "grow up" line.

If you want to show up those that dont help, and you feel you are in a position to do so (glass houses and such) then have at it.
But don't dress it up as showing appreciation for those who are helping, because its not, and doesn't make anyone who is helping feel better or good about what they are doing.

1) You are a Nenshi noun
2) Mikael Backlund, while possibly in Sweden already, was on Twitter within hours of the disaster asking where he could donate and help. He had organized a donation of food, water and blankets to the Drop In Centre as that was the only place accepting actual donations at the time.
Apparently some tweets are still there:
City of Calgary @cityofcalgary 21 Jun
Southland L.C. & Acadia Rec Complex FULL please go to Village Square L.C. or South Fishcreek Rec Centre if evacuated http://ow.ly/mfRg4
Mikael Backlund @mbacklund11 21 Jun
@cityofcalgary do the shelters need food or water?
Jeff Clemens @jclemy 21 Jun
@mbacklund11 “@calgarydropin Need food, water, blankets and toiletries at 4804 Edmonton Trail NE. We need help helping!

^ In addition, I know Theo Fleury is quite active in helping right now.
As the months go on, we'll hear more about other players who helped that don't do it for the press.
(but I'd like to just add a "we give and we give and we give, and they take and they take and they take" anyways)

One more thing I'd like to point out, and one that seems to be slightly overlooked at this point: Safety.
The area's that require cleanup are not the safest area's in the city. You have debris, dirty water and heavy machinery in the area. The potential for accident's is extremely high.
If a high profile person was to go into one of these area's, with any fanfare, it's going to immediately become a media circus and possibly attract a crowd of people, not looking to help, but photo ops. The last thing any of these area's need is people standing around and either putting themselves in danger or other's because they are not paying attention to their surroundings.
