Default Laptops with Haswell Chip

Thought I'd start a thread so we can track which laptops emerging with the latest chip that might be worth buying. I don't know a lot about it, but those that do can hopefully educate us.

Here's CNET article regarding the technology.

Lenovo's y400 series are all running Haswell now, and are well-priced gaming laptops to boot.

I just ordered a 13" 256 SSD Macbook Air with 8 GB ram, and i7 3.3 GHZ dual core Haswell. Should have it in a couple days, I am eager to see a laptop with iPad level battery life. I will report in after a week or so of use.

Heads up incase there are any similarities. I have the y470p and have tons of problems, most of which were all just repaired by full replacements of every part.

Speakers dying, HDD wiping itself, multiple dead pixels, and the smell of burning coming out of the vents when just surfing the net.

It was awesome at first though, big bang for the buck

I think we had a convo about this is a different thread, but my y580 is boss and hasn't had a single issue.

Mind you, it's running a series-3 i7, not a Haswell.

The y580 running Haswell hasn't been released yet however. If you're looking for a bit more performance it might be worth waiting for over a 410 or something similar. Though Lenovo's model naming seems to change yearly, and the 410 is almost identical to last years 580 (esp when you consider a GTX 750 is more or less a GTX 660).

I think the 400 series are 14" laptops, and the 500 series are 15.6". Otherwise, the hardware seems pretty interchangeable.

Just out of curiosity, what was your deciding factor for the i7?

Considering the Macbook Air or the Sony Vaio Pro. I've been using a Mac for the last 4 years and extremely happy with it -- but the vaio pro is amazingly light, and a great resolution touchscreen as well.

Not sure which way to go yet.

The fact that I cannot order anything without all the performance options whether they are applicable to my needs or not.

I know it hits the battery life a bit on graphic intensive applications, but that's just the way I roll. I do use iMovie, Aperture and keynote with animations quite a bit, and I do know it helps speed up that kind of stuff.

But at the end of the day, it's a $150 upgrade, which is peanuts to keep it a little ahead of the curve on resale.

I'm more looking forward to the types of Windows 8 tablets we'll see now running Haswell. The power of a Surface Pro with the battery life of an iPad would be awesome

My current 11" Air has been absolutely bomb proof. I have dropped it on a hardwood floor and tile numerous times, visited the absolute worst websites, and done absolutely nothing to manage files on it, and it hasn't missed a beat or had a single issue in 2 years.

I am going to the 13, because it is really tough working with keynote on a 11" screen, and I don't always have access to a monitor to plug into. Plus the extra battery capacity will come in handy on long flights.

I know they are stupidly pricey for the spec, but the reliability is second to none.

No need to defend the price. They are quality machines.

Any updates on your new Macbook Air?

I'm thinking to the the plunge in the coming days. I will upgrade RAM, but not sure I need the I7 vs I5.

Just jumped on this deal for $750.

4th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-4200U 1.6Ghz
8 GB RAM
500GB HDD/24GB SSD Cache
14" display with IPS, Full HD 1920 x1080, touchscreen
GT 750M with 2 GB of dedicated DDR3 VRAM
Product Weight: 2.9 kg

Going to have to see whether that pound difference between a basic 15.6" laptop, UTL processor for gaming and overall battery life.

Certainly more and more Haswell powered devices coming out as of late.

I got the base model 13" MacBook Air a couple weeks ago for $999. Just an awesome laptop. I took it to Vancouver with me for a course and charged it twice over the period of a week. Granted I didn't use it all day every day but that extended battery life is great to have. Great value laptop and I think best buy still has that sale on.

Can only hope that more Windows devices start reaching this battery life as a standard. 6 hours is certainly not bad for most other devices at all but with the MBA getting 11 hours, it's hard to look at a 6 hour battery life the same way.
