One of these pop up every couple months and turn into a debate nobody wins.
I would love to see a subsection for "company reviews" where once a company had a thread started there was no need to make another.
And yes im being a hypocrite for agreeing to the more threads are a good thing
Also, they have charged for exit rows for as long as I can remember. Why wouldnt they? its 10x more comfortable than a regular row.
That said, perhaps people over X ft tall should have first right to pay the $15 or whatever it is.

Don't EVER fly Air Canada. They are one of the worst companies I've ever dealt with. Not just airline, COMPANY. Air Canada charges $25 bucks a bag starting with THE FIRST CHECKED BAG for flights to the US. They have hidden fees in nearly every aspect of their business, and their flights are generally more expensive and less reliable. If you have to fly, and you aren't a giant (see above.) then fly West Jet. Air Canada is the freaking worst.

Lol.
Spring for the exit row.

Want to know why Westjet flight attendants are always so happy? Because they aren't sitting in your seat with your knees crammed into your chest.
This airline has decided to run itself right into the toilet. I will not be flying with them by choice again (have to for work).
This is the 3rd time that I have found myself aboard one of their aircrafts with their new "seating structure". As someone who is 6'4, I cannot physically sit in a normal sitting position while in one of their regular seats. I have to turn my legs outward because there is not enough room. If the girl infront of me during the flight had decided to put her seat back, I would've had to c*nt punt someone.
It wouldn't be so amazingly terrible if I could actually select an exit row seat - but no, they now have an additional charge for the privledge of sitting in the exit row, as well as their first 4 rows of "normal class". They are charging money for the GD exit row. I can't believe it.
For those of you who have not sat in the first 4 rows of a Westjet plane yet, you probably have, but you just don't remember it. It was about 15 years ago when airlines actually gave you that much legroom / seat room normally.
Add in to the fact that their inflight entertainment system is terrible / usually out of service.
Don't fly this airline if you have a choice. Fly Air Canada (I never thought I would say these words).

See they do if someone pre-books the exit row seat. Ok, that is fine.
But before when you checked in and the seat was not pre-booked, you can select it free if no one is sitting there.
Now when you check in, you have to pay $45 if you want to select that seat, even if it was not pre-booked. Yes, that was $45 on a $250 one way ticket to GP.

It's a shame that WestJet has decided to follow other airlines with thier nickel and diming of customers. I always try to get the exit rows when flying but will not be paying extra for that. Leg room is a problem as the airlines try to stuff more cattle/passengers into their planes. If someone reclines their seat all the way back my knees are jammed up against the seat in front of me. Sometimes I would get complaints from other passengers with me telling them it's because there's no leg room when you recline.
Coming back from Hawaii last January they were testing a new entertainment system that came in the form of a tablet that was passed out to passengers. It had downloaded movies and TV programs on it and a much better system than those annoying TV screens on the back of the seat in front of you.. I'm guessing they haven't gone that way yet.
Dispite all that I will still fly Westjet as they have the friendliest staff of any airline i've flown.

Have never been charged for an exit row seat. Mind you it's harder to get these days as business travellers seem to be the ones getting them.

I'm only 6'3 and I agree that legroom is a Westjet plane sucks, but also shoulder room. 737's are narrower than A320's and more curved at shoulder height.
The 2+2 seating on Air Canada's Embraers is awesome. I feel like I fit on those planes.

I discovered the magical wonder of seats 15A and 15F on the 737 800's and (12F on the 700's) and will always spring the extra 30 bucks for it any time I am on a Westjet flight longer than an hour. It might as well be First class with all the sweet, sweet leg room. It is well worth the price bump, and I would pay double the charge for it.
My favorite part is always the inevitable 6'5 + guy walking by and giving me the big dirty death stare as I am all stretched out airing out my sack.

I'm not a WestJet fan; next week I will be flying with them again for the first time in several years. And that is due only to the schedule; not choice.
However I will say that in a way I like they are now charging for the exit row. Hear me out.... On each of my flights the exit row was available to book. That means if I was a tall person I know that exit row would be available. The number of times I see some 5' 2" person sitting in the exit row- it's good to see that there is now cost associated with that choice.

Well they always allowed you to pre-book seats at a cost, which was fine. I have not problem with that.
But when you check in and the seat is free, I don't think someone should have to pay $45 for it.
But with the amount of leg room they are giving out now in their standard seats - it is completely appauling. My mom is 5'6 and 110 lbs - she says she feels "uncomfortable" in the seats and her knees rub against the seat in front of her.
It's completely out of hand because some moron with an MBA decided to crunch a couple of numbers and decide that putting x number of seats in an airplane was better for business with absolutely zero respect for their customers or any idea of how that will impact them long term.
I've flown Chinese / Japanese airlines with more leg room than these coffins.

I had 15F on a flight to Hawaii, it was fantastic. The only downside is the entertainment screen is another row ahead.

I'm 6'4 too. I just pay more for a seat with more legroom. It's the cost of flying for me. Don't be a cheapskate next time... This is a very solvable problem.

I always sit in the back of the plane
Anyways, I think West jet customer service is pretty good, when I was layovered to victoria in 2009 due to a snow storm, they gave us a free hotel room, meals, ferry ride to vancouver and credit for future flights. So that was pretty cool.

I fly whatever airline gives me the best rate. I'll sit on the floor if it means I get to the destination. All airlines suck and are crammed, when you fly a lot you learn to just suck it up

Sad comment is sad.
Before I was uncomfortable in their seats. Now it is to the point where it is almost unbearable, so unless I pay money, I'll suffer.
Sorry if I'm not willing to bend over like some people are for almost a 20% increase in the cost of flying for me, just to be slightly more comfortable.

I have no problem paying $50-100 more a return trip somewhere on a far better airline with all the hidden costs included - just a peace of mind thing. For short-haul trips, the best I have experienced is Air New Zealand. Singapore Airlines is my favourite international carrier.

I probably started the last on. Agree with the Op. Westjet has really forgotten what made them successful. They're just another carrier now, I've been looking more and more towards AC, something I never would have thought a few years back. Status miles can make a difference where price doesn't.
