They better hope the cap keeps climbing.
As good as Malkin and Crosby are, $18.5 million in cap space per season for two players makes it hard to build a team.

Wow. So Sid takes a hometown discount so Mario can give that cash to Geno.
He should've gotten the same as Sid but Sid should be at $9.5M too

Sid will earn $10M more than Geno through that 8 year term

I thought he was going to go to FA for sure.

Sorry Canucks fans but it's hard to imagine they would plan on adding Luongo's long term deal to this. I imagine Letang is going to further take a big chunk of cap room. Will be interesting to see how the Penguins can balance building a solid supporting cast as they are running out of room to keep any more star players long term. They are going to have to lean hard on their drafting to supplement this team.

Really? What made you think that?
I would've been shocked if he did

I guess it just depends on years 9-12 to see which player ends up getting paid more.

I thought teams couldn't extend them until July 1 (July 5 this season) prior to their final year of their contract?

There were rumours about a big offer coming his way from the KHL. Good for Malkin for commiting to playing in the best hockey league in the world over taking the easy money in the KHL.

Because he seems like a guy who wanted to get paid, that coupled with the fact that Shero went all in this year made me think that he had the inclination that Malkin was going to test FA.

For arguably the best player in the NHL, I'd take that all day long.

Him and Crosby are the only 2 players in the league who are worth that much. As much as it sucks having that much $ tied up in 2 players, they are worth it.

The best 1-2 punch down the middle in modern day NHL history locked up long term. Penguin fans have it so good.

Lots of talk about how the pens build around these 2 or 3 salaries once they add letang. The pens have won a cup, made the playoffs every year and seen the ECF 3 times in the last 5 years? They are making money hand over fist with these 2/3 franchise players. Players want to go there and play and take discounts to do it.
That franchise is laughing for many more years to come while having a chance at the SCF every year. Shero and co are far from worried about the future.
I can only wish we had their "problems".

I think most teams in the league would love to have their problems but all 29 would rather be in the position of the Hawks or Bruins with better overall teams. Nobody is saying the Penguins are screwed but their lack of talent on defense and goaltending has led to them getting exposed in the last two playoffs. They will be a cup contender every year but a lot of things will have to fall into place for them to win a cup as long as they continue with a somewhat flawed roster that is built more for regular season success than playoff success.

Well, its clear that no one has learned anything about ridiculous contracts.
At least with Malkin you've got a proven player so it isnt completely absurd.
