EDMONTON - Police are advising caution after the release of an Internet video that identifies two Edmonton men as allegedly having attempted to lure 14-year-old girls for sex.
“I would caution anyone, and everyone, to not judge anybody by information that isn’t complete, over the Internet especially, and when all the facts aren’t known,” said Bob Andrews, the head of ALERT’s Integrated Child Exploitation unit in Edmonton. “I think it’s really important to let the police do their jobs, and not judge someone in a public forum.”
The video was posted online Saturday by people identifying themselves as part of the Internet “hacktivist” network Anonymous, and names two men the Anonymous posters allege were “lured out during our pedo sweep operation” in Edmonton.
And the video:
So I don't really know what to think. I know the EPS does not turn a blind eye to online pedophiles. And I don't think they can just go out and arrest someone based on what these anonymous hackers say happened. I also don't really think we need to have vigilantes running around going after these guys before they have their day in court.
I think this whole thing is pretty interesting.

After the bang up job these hacks did in that girl suicide photo texting/bullying case - nothing this group puts out should be taken as fact.

I think it's a little much to expect Anon to gather this data, and then present it to EPS and say, OK go get him at 4:00pm. I don't think the EPS works that way, they are going to need to do their own research and data gathering before making any move. Setting deadlines for EPS to do something comes off as childish.
I would think EPS needs to see the transcripts of what was said, and not to mention, the people baiting these guys have no experience or police training.
I'm sure when police go into chat rooms there is some standard that they need to adher to in order to make it legal. I don't think just anyone can go into a chat room and say i'm a 14 year old girl, lets have sex, and then forward the information to the police expecting them to do something about it.
It's in pretty poor form to release information like this. There is no burden of proof here, they have presented these guys as pedophiles and provided no information to us, only hearsay. I'm sure they provided other information to EPS, but they should really let EPS handle it and follow up with them instead of crucifying these guys. I'm not defending pedophiles, but there is a legal process we are all entitled to. Anon seems to hold this process hostage.
What is to stop someone from getting a dollar store mask and something to scramble their voice and saying that they belong to Anonymous? I know that a bunch of people love the idea of vigilante justice on the internet but it just doesn't work that well when you consider the unknown nature of the source.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
They can gather as much information about these pedos as they want, but leave the real life confrontation to the police. We don't need people in masks pretending to be heroes. Be helpful, but let the police do their job.
Anonymous is like the posse's of the old west. They've done some neat things like going after the Church of Scientology. But they are wrong more often then right, and a lot of times the information they get in not legally obtained.
So they can demand that the police go and pick these guys up, but then the case gets thrown out of court.
Anonymous are not law enforcement they're vigilantes
They cast a wide net
And they're overly self righteous, take off your masks and maybe people would take you seriously.

This is great. I don't think that anonymous is actually wanting vigilante justice.. they want to publicly shame and discourage these scum from operating. The same way that cops post pictures of johns in the newspaper. Good for them.

Difference is that there is oversight and accountability for police. How do you stop anonymous corruption? I wish they'd go away personally

Nothing, nor is there supposed to be really. It's more like an idea than an organization. I'm sure the NSA are calling them typical modern terrorists.
The only risk pissing off other people who also like to call themselves Anonymous. Which I think if you're a hacker type is a notable risk, because your online life is going to be important to you.
