Hurricanes may face hundreds of thousands in fines due to scheduling nightmare
Interesting story coming out of Carolina. Quick Summary: College basketball team has priority in dates at the PNC arena and have reserved so many dates that the Hurricanes could not submit a list of potential home dates that would not conflict with the college team's dates to the NHL by the June 1st deadline. Carolina faces a $100k fine from the NHL for each date it has to change now.

Quote:
The Carolina Hurricanes could be fined hundreds of thousands of dollars by the NHL because of a scheduling conflict with N.C. State University over event dates at PNC Arena, Hurricanes president and general manager Jim Rutherford said Friday.
Gale Force Holdings, which owns the Hurricanes and operates the arena, has been at odds with the university’s athletic department for months over scheduling. A June 1 deadline for N.C. State to free up possible dates for the hockey games – as well as concerts, pro wrestling and other events – likely will not be met, Rutherford said.
“We do not have the dates,” he said Friday. “We have to have the dates (to the NHL) by June 1 or we will be fined for each date that we later change.”
The NHL releases its schedule in early July. If the dispute with N.C. State forces the Hurricanes to change game dates after the schedule is set, the league could fine the Canes $100,000 for each date that must be changed.

Or we (not my money!) could pay their fine for them in exchange for the pick!

You know there's something wrong with an NHL team in Carolina when a freakin college basketball team has priority in dates.

It's not just the NHL. Besides NASCAR (maybe), everything takes a backseat to college hoops and football there.

I understand fan appreciation for hoops, other sports and probably even church is higher down there but tickets for college hoops are less than half than an NHL game, If I'm an owner paying a big lease and big salaries... I want priority.

The NHL will probably go easy on them.

guess they should have spent less time on new threads, and more time on getting dates to wear them... *chuckles*

College's can't pay their athletes, so their profit margins probably beat the pants off a team like Carolina.

Are they really? Down there?
Supply and demand drive the prices... if demand is higher for college hoops, those tickets will be expensive.
Heck, there are some sections in Carolina that are $9.99 per game.

Let's not get too carried away here. This is clearly an Athletic Director on a power trip, trying to dictate the Hurricanes home schedule. She has pulled these types of antics before while at Maryland. Ultimately she will be put in her place. If this doesn't get resolved, they could really to put the squeeze on NC State by threatening to move back to Greensboro (about 40 minutes away) to the arena that was home to the Hurricanes when they first came to Carolina. That would leave NC State with an empty arena for all but 25 dates. The Hurricanes are also responsible for booking all other events like concerts, shows, etc.
If you look at the first couple of comments to the article it shows the average attendance for the Hurricanes (~17000) and the NC State Men's BBall team (~12000). College basketball is big down here, but it's mostly the Tar Heels and Duke, with NC State being an afterthought. NC State basketball hasn't been relevant since 1983 and they are doing whatever they can to bolster their image.
Also, being from Southern Alberta and having lived in North Carolina for 4 years, I would say church is as big in Alberta as it is here. What relevance this has, I'm not sure.
This will get resolved without much fanfare. It has been a slow news week and the Hurricanes were front and center yesterday with the new jerseys. As a Hurricanes Season Ticket holder I just want more weekend home dates instead of Tuesday/Thursday night games.

I know right, it's almost like it's a place where college basketball is by far the biggest sport around. Hockey should only be played in places where nobody likes anything else.

Why not play at least some of those games in Charlotte at the Time Warner Cable Center where the Checkers (the 'Canes AHL team) play?
20,000 seats, it's still in North Carolina... I'm sure the team would draw well there.

I can't imagine there's any interest in splitting games among 2 different venues, either from the league or the team. It messes with season ticket sales, adds another level of logistical issues and really wouldn't provide much of a benefit to anyone except hockey fans in Charlotte.
