Default Bridge Collapse in Washington

Quote:
MOUNT VERNON, Wash. -- The Interstate 5 bridge over the Skagit River collapsed Thursday evening, injuring a unknown number of people.

Both the northbound and southbound portions of the bridge dropped into the river sometime before 7 p.m., according to Washington State Patrol trooper Mark Francis.

Francis said several cars were on the bridge when it collapsed, and many are now in the water.

It's unclear how many people were injured or killed in the collapse.

This is an irrational fear of mine. I know the chances of our bridges collapsing are next to impossible but it's always in the back of my mind when crossing or going under a bridge.

Wow... I'm pretty sure the wife & I drove over that bridge last September on our drive to Seattle. We took interstate 5 for a good chunk of Washington after crossing the boarder in Abbotsford.

You just know some conspiracy theorist read that and now believes that the US just bombed its own bridge with a B-2 stealth bomber because reasons.

Just a small sample of the pending crisis of America's failing infrastructure.

Just waiting to be rescued. Not sure if I'd sit there or swim to shore. Maybe he's not a strong swimmer...

Never understood why there wasn't a massive investment in infrastructure construction during the recession, low borrowing costs, high unemployment, and crumbling infrastructure.

Or injured enough he's not safe to attempt it. Wonder how strong the current is, as well.

I just drove over this bridge on my way back from Cali two weeks ago. There were a lot more bridges on the way I thought would collapse before this one. Particularly the ones going from Portland, OR to Vancouver, WA. Felt safer on the cliffs of California.

Sounds like someone ignored a height restriction.

How terrifying that would be to suddenly feel the road drop straight down. Hopefully the number of casualties is low. I thank my lucky stars that I will never have to worry about that happening here.. we're getting four new bridges within the next decade.

Fortunately, it looks like a detour route is going to be fairly simple, however, there's still going to be traffic nightmares.

There was, although massive is a relative term. Many projects were financed by federal infrastructure grants, and the Build America Bonds program provided significant federal contributions to bond offerings financing certain infrastructure projects. Those bonds were also incredibly popular with investors. Unfortunately the Republicans killed any chance of extending the program beyond 2011.
