Default End of the road for Shanahan?

Although the explanation is not out yet, the latest suspension to Gyba has me shaking my head. We all know that Shanahan has a history now of suspending due to the result and severity of injury and not intent. In his player safety videos he even makes it clear that the outcome weighs in on his decisions.

I've never agreed with that as an effective deterrent. In my opinion suspending players for making dangerous and illegal plays in which the outcome was not very severe would be a much more effective way of managing player safety.

While I'm eager to see the explanation on Gyba, when you compare it to his video of 'legal' checks (one including Matt Stajan), it really makes you wonder:

I'm sure that when the video comes out, Shanahan will mention that Gryba:

(1) Took advantage of a player in a vulnerable position
(2) Went shoulder-to-head as a principle point of contact.

Horrible pass from Diaz, he should be suspended for a few games for attempted murder.

and #1 is garbage because the hit was clean. You could realistically say the same thing about any clean hit that results in an injury.
#2 is completely untrue, and the replay videos clearly show. It appears that Eller's head may not have been hit at all.

I'm sure charges are being filed in Montreal as we speak.

It wasn't obvious to you that Campbell's Wheel of Justice just has a different spinner before now? It's still nothing but a determination based off of some schmuck's (Nowadays that schmuck being Shannahan) train of thought, the actual rules be damned. Shameful that they're going to suspend someone for a legal play.

I really thought he wouldn't be suspended, because while Eller was vulnerable, it's not like Gryba exploded through the hit, or anything. It was about as tame a hit as could be in that situation. Gryba could've destroyed him by taking a few steps, coiling up and then pushing through the hit, but that didn't happen at all.

Really disappointed with this suspension.

I'm sure that Shanahan will mention that as well... the problem is that he'll mention it and it'll be completely untrue.

His head must have been hit. I think he was knocked out before he hit the ice and that's why his face went splat. He didn't seem like he was trying to brace his fall.

Then show me a replay of his head getting hit because all of the replays I've seen make it appear that at worst principle point of contact was not the head and I've seen a few that make it appear that there was no head contact at all.

Certainly doesn't help that Gryba is a "no-name" AHLer. The lack of name recognition hurts him here. If this was Erik Karlsson hitting Eller, they'd probably give him a trophy.

He didn't really have time to brace for anything before he hit the ice. He was also spinning, so its hard for the brain to interpret in time where he needs to brace.

Worst job in hockey. I don't think Shanahan is the right guy for the job. He should go.
Why? Ex-player make for great advisors but for the over all judgement it should be an ex-ref with decades of Experience. I would make a case for Kerry Frasier manning the discipline board. Has a much better objective on what he is looking for when it comes to discipline.

Can also handle the rigors of making tough calls.

One does not need to be hit in the head to be knocked out or have a brain injury. It's the brain hitting the skull inside the head that does the damage. A person can simply be hit very hard and have the rapid momentum decrease result in the brain slamming into the skull and the guy being knocked out. Now obviously it's easier to have that momentum issue if the head is hit directly but it need not be the case.

Same garbage as ever... punishing the results rather than the intent.

Meanwhile, this probably doesn't even get looked at:

In related news, Marc Bergevin is looking for an accomplished tailor to mend the holes in the knees of his pants...

Video is out:

Reason for suspension is Rule 48, principal point of contact is the head.
