Premier Redford tells schoolkids to beware of such opponents as Wildrose Party
http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/al...937/story.html
Quote:
Alberta Premier Alison Redford is warning young schoolchildren to beware of the Opposition Wildrose party because, she says, it is committed to not building anything.
|
Quote:
Redford told the children — and the parents and dignitaries seated behind them — that while her government is committed to building things, her opponents are not.
The Wildrose party and its leader Danielle Smith have heavily criticized Redford for planning to take on $17 billion in debt over the next four years to pay for infrastructure.
|
Quote:
Redford told the children that those criticisms are false, that debt is actually an investment in necessities of life, and that the opposition is trying to score cheap political points.
The premier made similar comments to children in Calgary on Wednesday while announcing new schools for that region.

Dumb. So dumb. God dammit, Redford. Way to play into Wildrose's hands.

Politicians should be leaving kids out of it, but she is right that you can't directly translate investment in infrastructure into unrecoverable debt. It's a good investment. It is cheap politics to try and push that idea.
One of the best things the Alberta PCs did years was build up the infrastructure up north and it's paid for itself over and over. It's one the main thing that entices investment.

My family and I are looking to move in the next few years. So my wife says to me the other day "hey, all these new schools are going to be built! We have more options for communities to look at." To which I replied "I'll believe it when I see it."
I'll believe Redford's PCs when I see the schools built. In the meantime, I'll plan my house buying around established communities WITH schools.
Jebus, I dislike this lady.

You already live on a community with these proposed new schools.

She's an ever loving twit who's only defense is the booga booga evil Wildrose defense.
The Conservatives would probably bump up 20 points if they tied that woman to the front of a train and chugged her out of the province.
Worst leader ever

Yah, but we're looking to move. So one of the criteria we're looking at is easy (walking distance) access to elementary and junior high schools for our son. Specifically Catholic school. So this narrows down the selection choices of communities. As well as house size (bungalow or split) and several other criteria.
Right now where we live, Martindale, we'd have to drive our son to Elementary or K through 6 school.
Like I said, I'll believe these new schools will go up when they're built or they start building.

There is a time and place for Reford to take shots at the opposition and this wasn't one of them. Incidents like this will give dissentors in her party more ammo to have her replaced at next November's leadership convention.

Maybe if she attended more sessions at the Legislature she wouldn't feel do compelled to lash out elsewhere.

Why do you need to pander to 8-year olds? Its not like they can vote, and really, its not like they're going to listen to what adults say anyways.

I didn't hear about her attendance. Is there anywhere that publishes MLA attendance records.
It wouldn't surprise me if she wasn't showing up.

No published record that I'm aware of.
While they are sitting other members aren't allowed to point out who is or isn't there. Her frequent absences were in the news in March (IIRC); she always has a good reason - going to Washington - going to China, etc.
But even when Leg is sitting (Monday to Thursday); they get every 4th week off. This is called "Constituency Week".

There is irony in Redford's "we're committed to building" education rhetoric when she is breaking promises left right and centre about funding education.

... so if all of her absences are justified, in fact her attendance record is good, then?
Or should the Premier stop doing her job in order to attend every single session of the Legislature in order to protect herself from snide remarks from her opponents? Perhaps that is what Danielle Smith will do? Who knows?

My only point about her attendance was that being there would give her more opportunity to lash out at the real opposition; rather than at elementary students.

Perhaps the relevant legislation which granted the Province the authority to collect that revenue requires surpluses to be returned to municipalities?

I guess, but she's the Premier, so she won't always be able to attend every session of the Legislature. It seems like a bit of a moot point to make.
In any event, I suppose I take your real point, which I presume to be that it was stupid of her to make those kinds of remarks to elementary students. Agreed.
