Hold the phones, I did some more research and found that the Canes have only played in 2 SO games this season and went 2-for-4 in SO attempts. (so it looks like we will share the "record" unless Carolina goes to SO tomorrow). Looks like every other team has scored at least 3 SO goals this year.

I sure hope Carolina goes to a shoot out tomorrow, but not because of shoot out goals.

The NHL will never go back to ties on Bettman's watch. I know it's been mentioned a million times but if there was and additional 5 minutes of 3 on 3 prior to the shootout, very few games would be decided by a shootout. I hate that a team's playoff chances are affected by a gimmick.

3 on 3 is as far from the normal game and as bad as the shootout, IMO.
10 mins of 4 on 4, then a tie if nothing is decided would be my preference.

Ties in the regular season, as much overtime as is needed in the playoffs.
Simple.
Shoot-outs are horse-****.

Please no going back to tie games. I understand peoples frustration over the shootout, but at least it provides closure. With a tie game, neither team is satisfied or really happy for their team. Games need a clear cut winner.
Maybe we wouldn't have so much hate for shootouts if we could actually win them. Just being completely biased as a flames fan in my opinion.
3 on 3 could be enjoyable as it may bring these players back to the good ole days of street hockey.

I actually thought that SO would be a good thing after the '06 lockout. But only cause I thought the Flames would be decent at it.
We've got to have the worst shootout record in history, and if we would have
won a couple more each season we probably would have made the playoffs during this recent drought.
So based on that, I want to get rid of it.

Almost all levels of hockey use a 3 on 3 drill and have for a long time.
Shoot out drills are mostly because the kids see it on TV and want to try it.

Tie's are stupid. Your kids are going to look at you funny when you tell them about how games used to end without a winner back in your day.
You go to a hockey game to see a winner and a loser. The shootout is here to stay and is the best way to produce a winner and a loser within the confines of broadcast television during the REGULAR SEASON

The leafs are 0 for 5 in shootouts this season. That is pretty impressive, considering they made the playoffs. Not sure how many goals they scored though.

Only thing I hate more than a shootout is a tie. The biggest problem with the shootout IMO is the points system. Needs to be 3pts for regulation win, 2 for OT/SO win, 1 for OT/SO loss, and 0 for regulation loss.

I would prefer a full period of 4-on-4 to minimize the number of shootouts required. Most games probably wouldn't make it past 10 minutes. The shootout is a disgrace, as is a points system where some games are worth 3 points and others are worth 2.

I have considered making a threat about 10 min OT. I think its a great idea. Better hockey down the stretch and more entertainment for the fans. Its a win-win in my opinion.

Really is quite simple - the NHL is a points based league, not a win/loss league. Make it 3pts for a win,1 pt each for a tie, no OT/SO.
Have watched far too many games where neither team was good enough to win in regulation, that is what the 1pt for a tie is for, not being good enough to win means both teams suffer in the standings.
This will also have the benefit of stopping eastern games OT/SO eating into Flames games on TV

Personally I enjoy the shootout, I like the crazy moves some guys try and pull off and I like seeing a ridiculous save when a guy is skating in all alone. I think it's fitting for the end of a regular season game during nights where the game wasn't all that exciting because of the continual improvement in defensive systems and sound coaching. It's sort of a reward to the fans.
I'd keep the shootout but adjust two things:
1. the points awarded so that a shootout victory is rewarded but less so than a regular time victory. 2 points for a regulation time win, 1 point for an OT/shootout win, 0 for a loser in either case.
2. go to 5 shooters instead of 3.

As a judge of various combative sports, we have on occasion called a draw on fights where there was a hard fought battle with no clear winner. The fans cheered just as loudly for that decision as they would an awarded victory to the best fighter.
My point being is that maybe ties aren't a terrible outcome between two teams that have ended 60 minutes of hockey (plus 5 min of OT) with neither team being superior.

This part always confused me. Why DID the NHL decide on 3 shooters? 5 is standard everywhere else if memory serves.
