TSN’s Bob MacKenzie says Craig MacTavish’s bold move could be trading 1st pick
As the title states, MacT's bold move would be to trade their number 1 pick.
It would probably be in their best interest to do so. Get help now. But I sure dont like some of the free agents that are mentioned as possible candidate to sign.
Quote:
On defence, they might try to trade for a Kevin Shattenkirk, or go after free agents Andrew Ference or Mark Streit, Dreger said.

Upfront, Dreger listed free agents like Jarome Iginla, Brenden Morrow, David Clarkson and Matt Hendricks.

I've heard a few people mention Iginla could end up in Edmonton this summer. Unfathomable.

They can't possibly give a UFA what they want (term and money) with their cap constraints, can they?

It would be iffy. They need to sign Gagner this summer but their other RFA's shouldn't cost an arm and a leg. In the future when Hopkins needs a new contract Hemsky's off the book and when Yakupov is up Horcoff's atrocious contract is done (if not bought out earlier).
They could and probably should be targeting a big name defenseman but there's not a ton of options out there.

It would require them to trade Hemsky and buyout Horcoff, both of which I believe will happen.

Edmonton should trade their first. But it probably won't be to Calgary.
I think it is possible Iginla ends up an Oiler. Teams like Pittsburgh will probably have trouble fitting his salary in. Plus it brings him closer to Kelowna. He is from St Albert.
That said, I don't think it is likely. I don't think he wants to join Calgary's rival or deal with the controversy. Plus, does he really see Edmonton that can win a cup in the next two seasons?

Why would Iginla go anywhere near Edmonton? His goal now is to win a cup. They could throw the max at him and he would still say no.

Iginla has plenty of dough, I doubt money will factor much into his decision.

Yeah there's probably a better chance Iginla comes back to the Flames than to the Oilers which is slim and none. Now he's had a taste of the short traveling of the Eastern Conference I don't see him coming back out west unless its to play under Darryl again.
None of those names above are going to make them a contender but a character guy like Ference would probably help out somewhat.

Doesn't really change anything. They only got Horcoff, Yakupov, Hall, Eberle, and Smid signed beyond next summer. If they really get bent over in the negotiations between Hopkins and Schultz they could buy out that last year of Horcoff's contract. Right now due to bonuses Hopkins, Hemsky and Schultz are still costing about 12.5M cap space.

Plus, Toker, despite being on the Bruins for such a long time, still has some loyalty to Calgary... maybe that would prevent him from going to the Greasers too since we'd be forced to boo him.

Who in the he11 would trade for Hemsky ($5 mil)? I think he would be a buyout option as well.

Edmonton has reached the Bouwmeester dilemma.... They have great players who are losers.
They won't win with them and very soon they will be only able to get a 15th round pick and a couple of prospects for them.
They like the Flames will be better when they finally bite the bullet and get rid of them.
They have a harder problem..... other than Gagner.... who has been a Oiler for 6 years now and "led" has not won any games for them.... it is harder to identify the problem child.
Eberle and Hall 3 years each.... Eberle is turning 23 next month and his 6M/year kicks
any of the Edmonton STARS might not hurt a team lead by a Pronger to the degree Bouwmeester did to the Flames but sure doesn't appear that any of them have the Royal jelly to carry a team into contention.
This year is really the tipping point where everyone has to realize that not only are the Oilers not as good as the sum of their parts....... Some of their parts are not near as good or valuable as they are being given credit for.
Would you trade Hall-Eberle and RHN for Stewart, Backes and Steen? Not on paper but St.L. will likely be in the playoffs for the next 2-3 years... where will the Oilers be?

1) I doubt he has loyalty to an organization that traded him after he signed a "hometown discount".
2) he's from Sherwood park.

If he doesn't get his cup this year he likely won't. Pittsburgh can fit him in with his 2M cap hit this year.... If he gets 5M+ next year it will hurt that teams chances to be elite.
Unless it is with the team he joins at the trade deadline.

I totally anticipate the Oilers will trade their pick. People are saying they should pick Nurse, but doesn't help them right away, likely..they're better off using the pick to get a D that is just entering his prime.
They need a player like Giordano was a year or 2 ago.
I wonder if they could pry away a D that is a little further along in development... Like Hedman or Larsson... Maybe Scott Howson could get Murray from the Jackets.
